How to own microsoft.com

Well, okay. Of course you can't actually own microsoft.com, but heres a little trict to try and impress your friends

Goto My Computer

Go into your hard drive and goto:

E:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc

When there open the file:

hosts

In there write any domain you wish, at the bottom.

For example

127.0.0.1 www.microsoft.com
127.0.0.1 www.yahoo.com

That will point it to your localhost, therefore if you have an HTTP server then you'll see it through that domain.

If you have another site you want to direct it to, just change the 127.0.0.1 to the IP of that site.

Its as easy as that.

But seriously, this might come in handy, if your sick of using localhost all the time, you can change it to something nicer

nextech
I live with 4 roommates and I control the internet usage. reason I’m the one with degree and pay for it. Well i have the control of the DNS server at my place so when ever they become bandwidth hogs, I change the A records to point websites to ej.no-ip.com so all they can browse is the green aches.

Yeah, that will be nicer. You can access the HTTP server ( if you have one installed and working ) via the hostname ( name of the computer running the server ). Another alternative to localhost and the loopback address 127.0.0.1

Reminds me of this HTTP problem I had just last week.

Had SuSE Linux 10 running Apache web server in a virtual machine. The hostname of the virtual machine was linux. The guest OS was Windows 2000.

I opened Firefox and typed http://linux to access the web server on SuSE. Worked absolutely fine .. until at some random point Firefox took me to www.linux.org everytime I put http://linux in!

Of course, fixed the HOSTS file and it went away. Sort of random that it happened but yeah.

Another way to annoy your friends with this file is to make another entry which points to the IP address of say Google.com, but assign the domain www.microsoft.com or www.yahoo.com to it. Hehe
