It really is. I never thought Microsoft would do such a thing. Maybe they just followed in the steps of Google, though. But if that is the case, they'll obviously lose. Google offers you a 100MB account, after all. And you can get many more e-maail accounts (but I don't know the exact number) with Google Hosted.

What is it with those scumbags Microsoft?brbrThey say the whole service is freebrbrThen when you sign up, it comes upbrbrdivdiv class="Title""Enter payment information"brbrWhat the?brbrSo annoying Microsoft, I hate them!!!br/div/divbrEDIT:brbrbQ: Why do you need my credit card for a free subscription?/b

bA:/b
Even though Microsoft Office Live is a free service during the beta
period, we still require a credit card in order to validate that every
customer is a legitimate entity. When you sign up for a Microsoft
Office Live account, Microsoft performs a $1 authorization check on
your credit card to verify that the card information you are using is
valid and up to date. A temporary $1 charge may appear on your online
credit card statement for a short period, but will not appear on your
final billing statement for that period. pRequiring a valid credit card is also
intended to decrease the likelihood that malicious users will sign up.
Web-site scams, such as phishing or spamming, often use fictitious Web
sites to deceive consumers into disclosing credit card numbers, bank
account information, Social Security numbers, passwords, or other
sensitive information. We limit the number of offers to one per credit
card number as added protection against malicious users signing up for
our service. /p
pWe also require a credit card to facilitate payment of services
during the beta (for example, the purchase of additional domain names)
as well as at the conclusion of the beta period, when customers will be
asked if they would like to continue using our services on a paid,
monthly subscription basis. With your explicit permission, we can
establish monthly billing using your credit card information. You will
be able to continue using our services without interruption and without
having to submit additional account information. /pbr

This is good if you don't mindhaving Micro$oft products appearing on your site and you get nothing in return.

The best thing to a free hosting is actually buying a cheap hosting for a few dollars per month. That way you can advertise your own products etc.
