It depends on what you are going to do with it. The fact is that one cannot tell which system is best, but employing and using it according to his needs. If you want great security, you should try FreeBSd. If you are looking for compatibility with all the windows products, then choose Windows. For compatibility with PHP programing language go for Linux.

Something UNIX based, so a BSD or Linux. I know Dreamhost (the über host!!!) uses Debian (a flavour of Linux), however I've used webhosting before that run FreeBSD and have had positive experiences.

Debian GNU/Linux is the best. It's the most secure, stable, and fun of them all.

serriously. I've used it on several servers, and had them all stay up for about 8 months. (then I had to change some hardware)

If you want a commercial OS, check out Slow-aris.
