How do you guys choose your host?
Hi Guys,
I want to write an article on choosing a proper host for your site, and I'm looking for feedback on what people do when choosing their host the first time. Do you call their tech support, do you research web reviews, do you ping their servers? Etc... Basically, if you were going to tell a 30 year old who is looking for his first host- what would you tell them to ask/say/do? Looking forward to your thoughts! Thanks, Cody |

Hi Cody,
I generally don't call tech support, though that's an interesting idea. Usually the moment you say you're not a customer yet, they'll send you over to the sales guys. I definitely research web reviews (thanks Google!) It's a big plus if one or more of my favorite sites (which I visit often) is hosted by them. To the 30 year old: see what your friends are using, do a little research, and then pick one. Don't just go for the cheapest. |

Thanks-
Keep them coming- I was just told an interesting way to test- you call up, hit one for sales, see how long they take to answer. Call again, hit two for support, see how long they answer. If it takes way longer to answer support, then it's a fair bet that they either are overloaded with issues or they just place way more priority on getting new clients than keeping old ones... |

Asking the support guys a couple of technical questions would be anice idea, but probably a newbie cant do that and he might end up being treated well by a sales guy.
Pinging the server is of no use. The uptime / speed of hosting company's website will be good but the user will end up on a server shared by many hundreds and probably wont be anywhere nearly the speed of the companys server. The best advice to give is that, never sign up for an yearly contract untill you are sure about them. Go for a monthly contract first. |
