I doubt they'll directly release a port of GTalk for Linux. They'll most likely aim for a higher potential userbase with Windows. Placing workforce on Linux development will distract them in improving the Windows version.
Mainstream sucks, yeah, but face it, that's the only way to go if you want anything full-featured. So it's time to stop being an elitist and use a dual-boot partition. Wink

Google uses Linux for all of their servers, and all of their employees workstations I believe. I think Google Toolbar opened a door to more multi-platform Google Software releases.

Google talk protocol is Jabber based... which works on Linux

get the Gaim IM client for free and follow the instructions on the google talk site to configure it for Gtalk.

sure you want the conferencing.. but I think they will stick with windows for that unless someone creates an off shoot of jabber that supports the other features in the Gtalk protocol.... I am very sure there are peoples that could make that happen.

I use windows at work but Linux at home. Most of my friends and family use linux or are considering converting. I use Gaim in both places because I like to use the same program everywhere when possible (even though I like the interface for Google Talk better.

I'll wait for Gaim support for the talking feature ( I don't talk on the phone at work much anyway), but I would start using the gTalk client in both places if it ran on Linux.

I read a few months ago in a web page (from google I seem to remember) that they would port Gtalk to GNU/Linux in the future.

Gaim 2.0 was supposed to support this feature but it finally won't. Maybe in Gaim 2.1.

As far as I know you can run Gtalk in GNU/Linux with Wine, although I have never tried myself.

Tapioca also has libjingle support and also has the benefit of having a similar UI to Google Talk.
