Can anyone explain the search string structure that Google Desktopuses? I'm a big proponent of Firefox, and by far the biggestreason is the "Quicklink/Quicksearch" feature. This allows you tocreate bookmarks for search engines and automatically pass variables toit on the address bar. The default "google quicksearch" inFirefox is an example: Instead of going to google.com and typing inyour search, you simply type "google <searchterm>" in youraddress bar and it takes you to those results. Basically, quicksearches turn your address bar into a multi-functionaltoolbar.
I have dozens of customized Quicksearches. They're going to be abig feature in FF 2.0, and the process to create them will bestreamlined, but for now creating them is a manual process. I'm tryingto create one for Google Desktop. Usually the way to customize aquicksearch is to run the search manually, examine the resulting searchstring, and replace your search term with "%s" (without thequotes). For example, if I go to Google News and type in AJAX, Iget the following result -http://news.google.com/news?tab=gn&q=AJAX&hl=en& . IfI create a bookmark for this result, replace AJAX with %s, and givethat bookmark a keyword of GN (google news), I can then go to theaddress bar and type "gn XBOX" and it will take me to Google Newssearch results for XBOX.
So now I want to do one for Google Desktop but it's not working. The search string seems to change with each search. If I type in "YYY"in Google Dekstop, for example, I get the following result -http://127.0.0.1:4664/search?q=YYY&flags=68&num=10&s=gqlVRNsdb882A5-6BmKspPx8a9Y.
If I do a Google Desktop serch for ZZZ, I get this result -http://127.0.0.1:4664/search?q=ZZZ&flags=68&num=10&s=EwzvST0td4tHv8sYOmvyZrpZhhY
Theresulting strings after "...10&s=" is significantly differentfor each search. Is there a way to bypass that? That iswhat is preventing me from creating a Google Desktop Quicksearch. Why I replace the search string with %s and do a quicksearch, I get anerror "You requested a page that does not exist. You may havereached this page by clicking on an invalid link or bookmark.". Itried chopping the result off after "ZZZ", "68&num=", and"10&s=".
I know the question may be a bit archaic, but also hoping someone here MIGHT have run into this before. TIA. |
