Now, I know that I have been gone for a while, but what is with all the spam around here these days? Seems that it has gotten out of control... _________________

I really do apologise for the spam. I have no idea why this section of the forum seems to be the most likely target from those irriating messages. _________________ Hello? Is this microphone on? Testing testing one two three...

There is a constant stream of new spammers.
Personally, I delete an average of a dozen a day, and ban 4 or 5 spammers. What you see really depends upon
the time of day, as it's usually all cleaned out at least once a day.
It gets done a lot quicker if members PM a staff member to alert them of a problem.
I try to read as many posts as I can, but it's difficult to read all of them, every day.
A PM means that that spam gets deleted as soon as I (or a moderator) log in, instead of waiting until we've gone through the whole forum.
I once again urge all members to do their part, report the spam, and get it out of our community as soon as possible. _________________

Maybe a "report" feature would be ideal, or something similar...a bit like IPB's. _________________ Football Rumours | Gloog |

That would be ideal. Unfortunately, I don't know of a good phpBB mod for it, and I'm still hoping to have time to transfer over to vBulletin at some point. _________________ Google Search blog |

I found a report mod/hack or whatever you like to call it for Phpbb forums, I havent tried it out myself, and I dont have that much information about it, but I think it would be worth a try, seeing as the spam is quite bad. You can find the link to it here, (http://area51.phpbb.com/phpBB/viewtopic.php?f=24&t=22970) the link should be in the second post.
This post is of a report button Icon. (http://www.phpbbxs.eu/viewtopic.php?t=113)
You can also check out this post on the phpBB forums about a report mod. (http://www.phpbb.com/phpBB/viewtopic.php?t=295598&highlight=report)
I hope these help you out. If you would like a more advanced one, send me a PM and Ill look. If I can find a mod that bans the posting of specific urls I will supply that also.
Good Luck, Bballoakie
Edit: You may also want to check out these mods(If you dont have them already) if Spam becomes to great of a problem. Mass Delete Mod (http://www.phpbb.com/phpBB/viewtopic.php?t=376101) Forum is Invitation only (http://www.phpbb.com/phpBB/viewtopic.php?t=378134) Extended Censor (http://www.phpbb.com/phpBB/viewtopic.php?t=399887) Approval Mod [Mod must approve posts before they are posted, apply to forums with bad spam issues] (http://www.phpbb.com/phpBB/viewtopic.php?t=444466)
Security Mod[not sure if it is needed with the latest version of phpBB] (http://www.bitweaver.org/forums/viewtopic.php?t=977) You may also want to check out http://bbantispam.com/howto/ to find out more information about stopping bots/spammers This mod may also help. (http://www.phpbb.com/phpBB/viewtopic.php?t=396855&view=next&sid=23f466acffd5061786c35306184b441d)
Also Make sure you are banning the Ip of the spammers, as it makes it slightly harder for them to create a new account.
Again Good Luck!

Yeh, the spam is definately getting out of control here... Do you ban by username or by IP address or what? _________________ Sometimes I get the urge to run around naked....then I drink some windex and it keeps me from streaking. |

Both can be banned. A user and an IP address. _________________

I'm not sure that its fair to ban IP's. I know sometimes that it cannot be avoided but some innocent users then get caught in the crossfire. Some users have to share IPs in some cases. I know its not always the case in such a forum as this because this is an International forum rather than just a local forum. I'll shut me gob as I am digging myself a hole. (I once got banned from a forum for having the same IP as someone else, thats all I am trying to say.) _________________ cranditch |
