Thanks goes to David Castle "ctabuk" for writing us out the following:

Quote:
Over the years I've replied to hundreds of posts on the subject of DMOZ

As you know DMOZ is a human response Search Engine/Directory and has editors around the Globe.

Some of these Editors are extremely knowledgeable others can be sadly lacking. Google does take notice of sites listed there and so does MSN.

There are simple rules to getting a site listed by DMOZ:

1 - No Adult Sites

2 - No Gambling Sites

3 - No broken links - now there are two URL's that can help you find broken links within a site.
The first and easiest is www.sitereportcard.com If you score less than 8 forget submitting your site.
The other is also free but it is designed for the serious SEO people and needs time to understand and
learn how to use it http://home.snafu.de/tilman/xenulink.html

DMOZ has its own forum run by Moderators who are DMOZ Editors www.resource-zone.com/forum

There is a huge temptation for people to submit their site to DMOZ www.resource-zone.com and then to 'bombard' the forum with questions like 'Why am I not listed?' - Going down that road is a risky one, sometimes it works mostly it does not -Why?
Because normally a Search Engine/Directory is inanimate - you won't get personal attention. But here you will, and the mistake people make is to 'lose their temper' get frustrated etc. DMOZ Moderators are very quick to lock down a thread!

4 - Also the other big mistake people make is posting a site with a re-direct - forget it, simply don't bother trying it.

5 -You must post in the right category - that is essential. If there is not a correct category - 'then' use the DMOZ Forum,
list your site in your post and always use the same username that you have in this or any other forum. Ask for help, be extremely polite and heed the advice, you will get several replies - select carefully.

There is a bonus side to posting there, it is very good for Google BL's! Which is why you should use the same username.

Once you have submitted, forget it - move on - it has either been selected or it has not.

I am not a DMOZ Editor - I am a moderator at one of the larger SEO Forums.

Lastly Good Luck.

Thanks for the info. But, as I'm sure you know, you can make a perfectly good living without ever hearing of DMOZ. People lose way too much sleep over it. Work on building good content and getting links from important sites in your area and the SEs will love you.

Yes, but DMOZ is one of the most debated subjects in dozens of forums - so the concept of such posts are to assist both admins and Moderators as well as the more experienced posters in helping those new to the subject.

I tried for a year to get listed, and then someone suggested that I contact the editor of the page I was trying to get listed on. The problem was the page I was trying to get listed on didn't seem to have an editor. I then went back up the line for the editor of the previous page from the page I was trying to get listed on was included (the broader category before the category I was trying to get listed on). The editor is listed at the bottom of the page. When I finally contacted this person, she immediately added me.

No, there is no guarantee of traffic. All that a DMOZ listing tells the SE's is that yours is a quality site.
I have known listed sites change their content and direction after inclusion and retain their placement, but only for a very short time.

well in fact if you spend some time to visit some of the site listed in DMOZ ,you will find some of the link is broken already .And also you will find not all of the site is good enough to be listed .

So I would say that depends on standard of each editors .

Some one may say to get listed will get high pr but I do not think so .Hundreds of sites in DMOZ are PR2 or PR0.

Jackson_hu always report broken links in DMOZ to one of the forum mods.
PR has no bearing in DMOZ

I got listed after submitting in almost 1 week.. I even thought that was a bit late.. now I see I was wrong. Wink By the way, I think getting listed in DMOZ **does not bring** traffic (at least immediately), since there are a lots of sites.. the chance that the reader goes to yours is incredibly low.

If we think a bit further, we get the conclusion that such directories are basically wrong (however the truth is that they aren't *really wrong*)

1. Directories with few sites do not get much traffic, so you won't get much traffic, if even the base, which is then divided to the pages inside the dir is small.
2. Directories with lots of sites (like DMOZ) get huge traffic, however that traffic is then divided to more parts, since there are more sites Sad => you don't get much traffic.

The only thing you can do is to update frequently and give HIIIIIGH QUALITY content. If so, you'll hopefully get up to 100 visitors/day from DMOZ, lol.

well , I submit my web directory  to DMOZ two months ago. But I think it is quite hard to get listed even I follow the tips .The reason is I believe the category editor must receive tons of submissions regarding web directory related web site .

In this case , I just wondering what is their POV to approve a list ?
