I heard from various sources that the public release of Google's email client will be coming up pretty soon, since they've began limiting the number of invites given to Gmail users...

I remember when one invite went for $99.00 on ebay. Now they're only $1-2 tops?

I also know a couple people who've gotten 6 invites a while back, and now only get 1... I wish they had given me one when they had the chance... :p

A friend of mine got his account eleven days ago, and still hasn't got any invitations in his box. Not even a single one...

Maybe they're testing the system hard, maybe they're just provoking let's say anxiety due to the lack of accounts, or maybe they are launching the product to the general public soon and this is why more invitations are not needed. But who knows, we can only speculate Crying or Very sad

from what i have observeed for MONTHS since i got my beta testers gmail..is they will first (as they have done already)give out invites and allow others to test it. After the invites are given out and others have a chance to see what gmail is all about they will then test the system and its capacity for the mass signups it will recieve. After thats dont then they will wait a little bit and put it out for grabs to the public.

Meatwad, this proves the point that invitations are not coming and therefore the ones that have already come are in high demand and understandably of higher value than before. i have had my gmail account for almost a month now and was waiting forever for my -one- invite to come, but still no cigar Sad. the best you can do is browse the various gmail swapping and trading sites, offer a deal and luckily have someone take you up on it in exchange for a gmail invite. or, if that doesn't work for you, maybe try one of the several gmail randomizers out there Wink although you might waste hours trying to get one, since it's based on luck, not skill.

all in all, i think google will release gmail to the public soon...is no gmail invites an indication that they're wrapping up the beta testing and ready to release it to the public? nobody knows for sure, but we shall see.

The fact that they are decreasing the amount of invites that are given might be so email accounts aren't sold as much. I don't know why anyone would want to buy an account that was already made when you could just buy an invite but people can do what they want.

^ That's true.

Actually, I don't know why anyone would want to pay for it at all - account or invite. Even if someone were to pay for it, $99??? Isn't that a bit... Excessive? And to think places like this offer them for no money...

It's a great thing, but if you can get it for free, why pay?

It's a shame if that really is the reason why Google is toning down the invites though... Many, many people still haven't been able to try it out and they might not even be able to until the final release, all because of some greedy people...

gmail i think should hold back a little while on the release. the more they hold back....the more publicity they will get. since i have gmail im not too worried on when it will be released..but for those who dont have it...expect it to be a month or more till release date. Very Happy gmail kicks butt in my mind.

Yes, Meatwad, that may as well be the case...as Google recently outlawed selling and/or trading of gmail accounts. I have also heard that the invite flow has stopped due to maintenance...but for whatever reason Google has, I'm sure it's quite valid. It is quite illogical to even think of buying an account when one has an opportunity to create a preferred username account, but it makes sense in some cases. For example, a person may want a particular gmail username, let's say, georgewbush@gmail.com (i can't think of another name, so please bear with me Rolling Eyes) but of course someone else has beat them to it and already registered it. Now, if that someone doesn't want that account anymore for whatever reason, but doesn't want the account to go to waste (especially if he/she can make a profit out of it, don't you think?), and decides to put it up for sale. There are actually many factors and variables in this kind of situation...the internet and people's motives are complex yet simple.
