before I read the LOTR series my sister introduce a book to me The Hobbit and from the beginning I really enjoyed how Bilbo Baggins got the ring from gollum and how he use it to slay the dragon... I surely hope they make it a movie also

Yah I got the books for my 8th birthday. Great books and I can't believe they left The Hobbit out of the movie series. it was one of the most informative books in the series. I hate it when they adapt books to movies but the movies came out all right. I'm not a huge fan of them but they made them without changing too much stuff around.

I liked the hobbit. Been years since I read it, but I still remember roughly the plot. After reading it I went on to read Lord of the Rings. I think there is a film, but I think it might be a cartoon.

I first read The Hobbit when I was 7, and I really enjoyed it. I came by a copy if it a few years back, and I've read it so much that it is worn and tattered. My favorite thing about Tolkien is his imagery, meaning the way that he describes the scenery, and the like. I felt as I was travelling along with Thorin & Company as they trod along the rough, and sometimes beautiful terrain. I felt cold and waterlogged right along with Bilbo as he floated down the Forest River atop the barrel. Tolkien has a gift for drawing a reader into his story and making them a part of it.

I've got many of J. R. R. Tolkien's books. I'vegot the Hobbit, the Lord of the Rings, the Silmarillion and Unfinished Tales. They're quite good, though I like the Hobbit and the Lord of the Rings best. I haven't finsihed reading Unfinished Tales yet. So I guess that's what it is for me right now - unfinished.

The Silmarillion seems to me quite boring, however, if you read it exactly after (or before) you read LOTR and the Hobbit, it's an amazingly good source of extra information. Thumbs up for Silmarillion!

That's because The Silmarillion is the prequel, if you will, to The Hobbit, and LOtR. It is really a history of the beginning of the world, the Elves, the Silmarils, and all (Elves, Men, and Dwarves) who are caught up in the fate of the Holy Jewels. The book also tells in brief, the creation of the Rings of Power, and the One Ring, which leads to The Hobbit, and LOtR. The Unfinished Tales is an elaboration, if you will, of some of the historical characters and events of Middle Earth.

yeah, you are right, Anita....
Silmarillion tells us the beginning/history of the elves of middle earth and all that..
but sometimes, histories are quite boring..but it still depends upon the taste of the readers.
all i can say is that..Tolkien works are really great!

Tolkien works are great for a very hmm.. "deviant" is not a good word here. So I want to say that Harry Potter is liked all around, though only the LOTR *films* are so popular. Many (almost all)LOTR fans like Harry Potter, still this isn't true backwards. Can somebody explicate me this?

I think the main thing is that the LOTR books were written in a different time.
There were not the things around that distract, and shorten the attention span of modern readers (TV, video, computer games, etc.).
So, even young people would take more time to get immersed in a book that wasn't necessarily fast-paced, or action-filled throughout.
The Potter books move at a faster pace, and with much less dwelling on small incidental facts.

Lord of the Rings is much better than Harry Potter. The only reason I read the Harry Potter books is because I've read the first few, so I might as well read the rest - they're not exactly the world's longest books. The Lord of the Rings is much more interesting.
Technology nowadays is very distracting. Even a few years ago it wasn't as bad - when I was about 10, I'd read the Hobbit, and the Lord of the Rings trilogy. Twice. Now, I read books much less. Mainly because there's less books in my house to read (read them all), but also because other things can be just as interesting as books.
