Oddly enough, I just couldn't get into Harry Potter. My nephew went through that craze a few years ago, but I introduced him to LOtR, and he was captivated.

It may be that I am into history. I can't really say why, it just fascinates me, and I am of the mind that it's important to know the history of something, even if it is a fantasy tale. LOtR is part of a history, and I think thats why I got into it as deeply as I did.

right...Tolkien wrote that during WWII, right?
and the story reflects to what is going on around him....how everyone is lured by great power and to rule the world.

He actually started it before WWII, and I think it's based more on his experience during WWI.
He lost some of his best friends during that war.(apparently his nickname at school was J.R-squared)

What I love about the Lord of the Rings is that it is so descriptive, detailed, and REAL. Everything is very intricately done. Few authors can claim to have their own orignal imagined characters and laguages. Most fantasy books now are based on what Tolkien made, beacuse he made everything seem real. I don't read the books straight through anymore. I simply shoose my favorite paragraphs and read them as one might a holy book. :-p I even have elvish runes drawn in chalk on my bedroom walls. I love how much detail there is to distribute in your own life. Very good wisdom morals are tought, but very subtly.

I actually have an Elvish/English dictionary with words in both Quenya and Sindarin. It would be cool if these languages were expanded upon, and made into a "living language".

I own that book as well, as frequently use it as reference when looking at Elvish that Tolkien language experts have translated. It's a real shame that so much of Tolkien origianal work was lost (from what I understand he actually had much more Elvish words but they were lost), but it's nice that so many people work on re-creating it. For Peter Jackson's Lord of the Rings movies many experts worked on re-creating it and I have been trying to figure out how they did it, but a lot of it I can't figure out exactly how they came up with what they did. A lot of people like to speak Elvish, but obviously it can't be fluent.

Kuting is right...you will love his works. I'd even advise going beyond LOtR, and the HoME (History of Middle Earth) series to some of his more obscure works. Even his children's books are good!

Good news to all Hobbit fans: Peter Jackson and the team that created the LOTR trilogy have neared the completion of "The Hobbit" film which is scheduled to be released probably this year or the next. A teaser trailer is already available and it sure looks like they did a fantastic job of putting this great adventure on film. One particularly interesting fact about the LOTR trilogy and the Hobbit is that the Hobbit is more fantastic meaning it has more of the adventure and fantasy elements as compared to LOTR wherein the story abd the plot is more on the characters and the war.
