I'm looking for someone who really knows google to explain this to me.... My site is about the "metrostars" which is the local NY/NJ pro soccer team. In the google "directory" I am listed above "MetroFanatic.com" my site is "Metro Magic" although this is true, when i do a search on google for "metrostars" I see "MetroFanatic.com" on around page 4 and my site is nowhere in sight... See for yourself..
http://directory.google.com/Top/Sports/Soccer/CONCACAF/United_States/Major_League_Soccer/MetroStars/
Anyone know why this is? My site hasnt been high in the directory for long, maybe about a month or two. |

Well firstly I would not worry about where you are listed in the directory. An update of PR has not shown on the toolbar or directory since the beginning of August.
Here's my advice to try and get your website listed higher in Google results, which is what matters.
Keywords: You won't believe how many times I have changed the keywords simply because being #1 wasn't bringing in traffic. Go to www.digitalpoint.com and use the wordtracker / overture keyword checker, have a look how many times people search for your keywords. Once your happy with say a sat of four high traffic keywords relating to your website then use these keywords within the text of your page, don't over do it so it looks spammy, just ensure the text makes sense.
Once you've got the keywords sorted (which can take a little time) then start to look at getting links to your website.
Links: Ideally, you want to contact over sport related websites and get them to link to you, look for high PR sites, PR4 and above is ideal, but nowadays providing that the website has a PR on the toolbar go for it.
Google looks at 'anchor text' so if your optimising yoru website for metrostars then make sure the text in the link back to your website says just that, working on your links can take time, it's boring but it will get you higher.
To see where you are in Google use the keyword checker tool again at www.digitalpoint.com enter all the keywords you are optimising your page on and keep a track of it moving. You will need to apply for a Google API for this.
So, in short, research your keywords, ensure the keywords are included in the title tag, content and description tag. Get as many links as you can, sign up to directories (check out www.aardvarksport.net)
Hope this helps.
