This is a project that we are doing to take a website to the top of natural search positions in the major search engines. We are going to document the step by step procedures of this project as they happen and everyone can track the results with us as we go along. This will give a foundation for the entire process of seo and it will work for any site.. We will cover each step from proper keyword selection to onpage work to links with details of how to do each process and then tell you "why" each process works. The "how" part is not as important to learn as the "why"

The reason I say this is because if you understand WHY, then you can use the process over and over again on any site for any subject, service or product.

I will also be providing a list of omline tools that are free to use to assist in your projects, and many of them I use on a daily basis.

Please understand that this is not an overnight cure. We do not do work today and get results tomorrow. This first phase of the project will take 30 to 60 days to get top positions on MSN. They are usually the first engine to see results in.

Ok, Here we go. The project site is http://www.dvdbargainalerts.co.uk/mxBB/ and it is a site that is for DVD's. So the first step is to pick proper keywords.
There is a free download of a keyword selector that queries overture and gives other features that we will use at www.goodkeywords.com. This is the first step. I know you can go straight to overture but this software has some additional features that may be helpfull so download this.

The next step will be selecting keywords and phrases to target and the reasons why we select the phrases we do. This will be posted tomorrow sometime.

Hello,

We are now going to go through the process of selecting keywords or phrases.  If you have downloaded goodkeywords. then go to keyword selections and search on dvd. The top search word is dvd.  Keep in mind that this is a U.K. site so make sure you select overture U.K to do your keyword research.

Now you take your top keyword and do a search in google, The reason that you always use google to do analysis is that they are the hardest engine to dominate. If  you can get top positions on google, most of the time you will get the rest of the engines if your seo work in complete, Plus Google has about 50 % of all search traffic.  The system I use usually get's all 3 majors.

For the term dvd there were 725408 searches last month on overture and when you check the top 5 sites the have an average of 10,000 links with approx. 90 % of their anchor text having dvd in it. This would mean that we would need close to the same amount of links on average. This is not a wise target to start off with. So we selected a lesser term to start with

We chose the term "cheap dvds" with 16114 searches last month on overture.  The sites still have dvd in 90 % of their anchor text but they do not have but 4.9% with the phrase cheap dvds in their anchor text. This means we can get this site in the top 10 of google in about 4 1/2 months with about 1,500 links.   Now, I know some of you are going to say that you are targeting a less competetive phrase for a fraction of the searches. Well, Not really. You see, We still have "dvd" in the anchor text of the phrase that we picked so the initial 1,500 links that we get will still be usefull once we get top positions for our first target phrase. This serves several purposes, First it gets you traffic to your site. It also makes other sites want to link to you because you are an authority site for a  phrase that should give you 100 to 200 unique visitors per day. So if you are selling a product or generating leads or even selling clicks with google (adsense) you will start generating some income. This will lift your spirits

Now, once you have top positions in the searh engines for your first word or phrase you can change your anchor text to just dvd. Then you are still climbing the ladder to the next level and making money as you target the next phrase.

I meet people all the time who starts out looking for the top keyword or phrase and get down in the dumps before they get to the top and just quit!  With this method you get rewards as you climb to the top of the major keywords or phrases.

Now if you are working a local or regional level you may want to target the top(like a Real Estate Website).

Tomorrow we will go into how to do a complete analysis of your competitions site!  I gave you the "WHY" today and will give you the "How To" tomorrow for selecting keywords or phrases.

Ok, Is everyone ready for the steps of analysis?

Lets get started.   The first thing we need to do is choose a site that is in the top 10 of google for the keywords or phrases that we might want to target.  We start with the top level keyword to check this keyword or phrase. The reason we always start at the top level is that many people are scared of top levels because of the amount of links they have or the PR of the page that is high ranking in the serps.

Lets cover PR first since it is very popular.  Pr is determined by how competetive the market or keyword or phrase is and how many sites are competeting for the term, and how many links the top sites have, and what format the links are in.  Let me give you an example. A  PR 3 site for the term "dallas Texas Real Estate" has 40 Back links in Google, 2681 in MSN and 481 in Yahoo. the url is www.keystomoving.com  (it was on page 3 or 4).  The term "Mexia Texas Real Estate" for www.lakelimestone.com has google   3 links,   MSN   65 links and   Yahoo has   164 links! and it was the # 1 site. Both are PR 3 sites with completely different amounts of links and totaly different rankings in the search engines.  Dallas has a much more competetive market than Mexia has. Mexia has 150 searches per month on overture and about 113,000 sites competing for this term.   Dallas has about 18,000 searches on overture per month and there are  30,600,000  sites competing  for this phrase.

Are you starting to get the idea?

Next is links. The first thing about links is that not all links are created equal.   I am going to give you a few very thought provoking  examples to prove this.    Go to google and type  "click here"  in the search bar and the adobe site comes up # 1 in the results.   Why does it rank for this?  The phrase   click here    does not appear on the page in the content or the source code.   Now type in the word  "failure" and George Bush's Bio page comes up # 1 in the results
yet this word is not in the content or the code either!  The reason this happened is because of the structure of the links pointing to these pages.   The clickable text is called anchor text.  This is the text with the link embedded in it and this is THE MAJOR factor that causes you to rank for a term.

                                                                              JUST A FEW HINTS

You can check backlinks by typing in      link:www.yourcompetetion.com   in the search bar of the engine you want to check backlinks on.

I always pick the site from Google and base the amount of links on YAHOOs back links because Google only shows back links from pages with a PR of 3 or higher.  So the rule is to pick the site by Google and the analysis and amount of links from Yahoo

Have you ever been to a site that had a PDF file that you could download?  They always tell you it is a PDF and that if you do not have the adobe reader that you can download  it free. Just  CLICK HERE . Go ahead, click on it! I just voted for the adobe site as the authority on the term    click here   .

The reason I went over all of this is because your competetion can have 10,000 links and you just might be able to beat them for a specific phrase with only 1,000 links if they do not have the proper anchor text.  This is the most important aspect of seo.

Now, you find a site  for a keyword or phrase that you want to beat and check their back links. Go to 50 of the links and see what the clickable text is on their links to get an average of what their anchor text is, Or you could invest a little money as I have done and you can have software that does this for you. There are plenty of programs on the market ranging from $49.00 to several thousand that will do this for you.  I did not spend thousands and this is what I do for a living.  I would never spend over 200 myself. But these tools are worth their weight in gold as far as time is concerned.  But most of you only have 1 or 2 sites and you can check all of this without these tools.

Once you determine how many links they have with your anchor text then you can decide if you want to target this phrase. You should try to figure an additional 20 % for the total amount of links you will need to beat the target site.  If you suspect that you can not get an accurate figure(anchor text is varying to much) then you can go to 100 of 200 to find out a better average. Here is a hint, Most sites have their URL or their company name as their anchor text. So it is fairly simple to beat most sites for a "ninche" market.

Ok, Now some of you have another question, Why do they still rank for a term if their anchor text is wrong?
The answer is that they have their keywords in the content or the title or <h1> tags.  Or they may have all 3 or even alt tags with their keywords or phrases and their PR is high from 10,000 links.

Basically they are shooting a shotgun blast and we want to take a rifle shot!  We want the straight path and want to hit the target right on the center. We do not want to shoot in a general direction and take the chance of missing the mark.

Now, you have to check several keywords or phrases and do analysis on site in the top 10 from each phrase to get to a reasonable target for your first target keyword or phrase

If the phrase has under 10,000 searches per month then you just need to bite the bullet and step up to the next relevent phrase. Anything less than 10,000 searches per month is pretty much a waste of time unless you are a realtor and selling million dollar homes!

Now you understand how to do analysis on you competitions websites and the basics of choosing the proper keywords.  We will start on the on-page work  within 48 hours.  If you have somethig you do not understand, Please let me know and I will get you the answer!

Sorry for the delay.

We are now going to get into the onpage area. This is the things you do to a webpage to help push it to the top of the search engines.
As we did before, We are going to cover the "why" in this post. The next post will be a step by step procedure to do this. It is a system so the same format can be used for each page you want to rank.

Search engines are set up to try to deliver the most relevant results to the user. It is disappointing when you search for oranges and get apples, So the search engines algorithm are set up to increase the odds that they are giving you the right results. As we proceed through this program you will begin to see how all of these steps fit togather to ensure good results when you do a search.

The whole  purpose of on page work is to make your webpage(notice that I did NOT say site) As relevant as you can for your targeted keyword or phrase.

When a spider enters a webpage it has a path that it follows, and the path can be altered by the way you set up a page. This is key to getting the spiders to see what you want them to see and in which order you want them to see the different things you set up in the page!

Here is an example. When a spider enters your page it enters and starts at the top left and works to the bottom right of the page.  The first thing it sees is the title(or should be the first thing it sees).  The title is the second most important factor on what makes the search engine decide what keyword or phrase you are targeting. This means that if you have the phrase Golf Balls in your title then the spider assumes that the page is about  Golf Balls.  Carefull consideration should be given to your title. If you put your URL or company name in the title. The engine thinks that your URL or company name is the subject of this page. This is not going to help you rank for your keyword or phrase. Here is an example.  You are selling golf balls and your url is "tommysgolfshop.com" and your company is "New York Elite Golf Supplies"   Now, You have a decision to make here, You are pushing Golf Balls on this page What is your title?

If you use tommysgolfshop.com in the title the engine thinks the page is about  tommysgolfshop.com Same with the company name.  Yet if you use "Golf Balls" as the title the engine will automaticaly put you in competetion for the term "golf Balls"  You can put Golf Balls by tommysgolfshop.com  .  This would be better than just the URL or the company name but, just putting "golf Balls" in the title make the page more specific and relevant to the search term. Add nothing that you do not have to. This only waters down the relevance of the page to the spider.

When you do a search in Google  look at the results and the keywors are highlighted. Words that match in the description are highlighted. You need to put as few words of phrases as you can to keep from watering down the relevance of that page.  If you go to the project site you will see that the only thing in the title is the phrase that we are targeting.. I know that you want to target more than one keyword or phrase. Have a little faith, we will get to that later. But lets get this format down first.  I have sites that target 1 phrase and gets hundreds of search phrases. I will explain this later.

Now, Doing proper onpage work can make your site jump several hundred positions within a few days. and if you have a page 2  to page 20 site this could put you in the top 10 in a short time in itself.

The whole purpose of onpage is to controll the way the spider crawls your page and to make your page as relevant as you can to the targeted term.

The next thing a spider sees is the meta tags ie: no follow tags or description tags. Even if they do not use them they still see them. You can get punished for keyword spam in meta tags so this would show that they see them. A lot of seo's do not believe this but it is fact.  If it is in the code the spiders see it! It may or may not help. But if you can get penalised then they are seen!

Then the spider starts down the left side. Then to the right across the body and then to the bottom right.
Now, If it starts down the left side from the top left most sites have their nav. links in this area. You do not want the spiders to see links to other pages first. This diverts it from where we need it to go which is the body(content area). The thing to do is put an empty text box(does not matter how small) in the top left of the page just below your header Image. This can be small. The reason you do this is that when the spider sees the empty text box and sees that nothing is there it will go to the right and start spidering your content without hitting nav bars and links. We need it to see our keywords or phrases and this makes that happen.

We have covered the "why" and some of the how tonight. We will have a bullet list of on page steps tomorrow night posted. All you have to do is follow step by step for proper on page.

Ok, This will be a short bullet list of everything you need to do to have proper onpage with notes for each!

1. Title: This should be as short as you can. and should only contain your keyword or phrase.   I would not try to target more than 2. I never target more than 2.  But, If you wish to target 2 it should be set up like this   Payday loans| No Fax Payday Loans.  The strongest phrase goes First. Any additional words waters down your relevance.

2. Empty Text Box Right below your header on the top left of the page

3. Place <h1> tags as close as you can to the top of the page but below the header image or flash image

4. Fill out the keywords and description meta tags With Not more than 3 keywords or phrases.  Remember the post above. Most will tell you that t5hey do not count be if the spiders see them then it will help!

5. Either BOLD  or put into Itallics  your keyword or phrase at least once in the content of the body

6. Insert a keyword or phrase into all of your alt tags. Here is an example:  Duckblind.gif.001   duckblind.gif.002   Just do one per image on your page if you have more than one Image on you page. This makes it look like a logical filing system for your images and you get to insert your keyword of phrase several times. This helps with keyword density.

7. Try to get a 4 to 6 % keyword density on your page

8. The copyright!  This is a way to make sure that last thing the spider see's on its way out is your keyword or phrase. Example:  copyright 2006 your copyright info |duckblinds  and place it in the lower right of the page.

9. If you have a lot of text on the page try to add  h2,  h3  tags!

If you follow this step by step I can assure you that you will have a well SEO'd page

In the next few days we will get into  the internal link structure of a site. This will ensure that you get PR to your internal pages and can make them rank for terms and phrases also.

This on page system can be used on EVERY PAGE in your site.

hi, although i'm not an seo myself i have one suggestion to make, i'd rather not think that the number of sites that are listed on any search engine is the actual competition for any keyword. coz even if the keyword appears somewhere in the body of those pages search engines will still index that page. but they are not competitors, instead u should take the number of sites that target the keyword by using the keyword in their title tags and also in the anchor text as your competition. you could easily get this information from google by typing

intitle:keyword

to find the number of sites targeting the given keyword in their title tag and

inanchor:keyword

to find the number of sites targeting the keyword by using it in their anchor tag.

hope this post might be of any help

deep regards

The search engines have them counted as competetion for the word or phrase. It really does not matter what our opinion is. I have sites that are only targeted for one word or phrase and yet I beat sites with the "other phrases"(over 400 in some cases) in their titles and url or anchor! So, in essence I am competeting for the word or phrase even though I do not have their phrases in the title or url, anchor or keywords of my site.

The search engines do not think, they do not have an opinion, they are a program and do only what they are programed to do.  Just like Dreamweaver or any other program. The search engines rank sites according to their algorithm. They do not waver.

I guess the point is that what I am posting in this thread is fact. . Our opinions do not count. What gets sites to the top of search does count in this thread.

These post are not theory. It has worked hundreds of times, over and over.  The reason it works is because you make the sites comply to the engines algorithm for top rankings.

Since this was brought up I will show you within 3 to 6 months with the project site and then you can judge for yourself if these sites are competing. This very site will get hundreds of top 10 phrases that are not in its title or url or in the anchor and it will beat many sites that do have the very phrases or word in their title, url, anchor, even meta tags. Yet they will be beat by this site.

Just hang around and watch. If you read one of the past threads I made a comment that you may want to target more words or phrases. Well, I ask again, Just give it some time and you will know how and WHY you can get a site that is targeting one word or phrase to get top 10 listings for hundreds of words or phrases.

"This very site will get hundreds of top 10phrases that are not in its title or url or in the anchor and it willbeat many sites that do have the very phrases or word in their title, url, anchor, even meta tags."

Sorrry man i have to disagree

By anchor text we mean text that's used in url. and it also includes internal and external links and also inbound links from other sources.

and so without including any keyword in title, url or anchor u wont be able to beat anyone who does.

if u want to target any keyword and if it dosent appear in your title or url its fine as long as u get backlinks with the keyword in the anchor text. else forget it , its not goin to work.

and if it does work just pm me , would like to check it out then,
well i suggest u take it up as creative criticism and work to prove it wrong.  might even help me.

best of luck

regards

Now. This site has only been worked on for 2 1/2 months! and there are over 140 phrases.

I do not care that you want to argue, But this site is about fact! NOT speculation. I will not post something unless I know without a doubt or I will tell you in the post that it is an opinion.

What you are doing is about the same as a medic telling a doctor how to apply a band-aid!

This is what I do everyday for a living! And the proof is there with an very youg site. Can you imagine a site that is 1 year into seo?

Just in case you are feeling froggy, I have a few hundred more to back it up!

Hi Jim,

I'd be interested in hearing if this project is going as you planned?

I noticed that the site is not currently in the top 100 Google UK results for the search term cheap DVDs, I appreciate that it takes time to establish high rankings especially if this was a new domain with no inbound links but just wondered if you expected to see any results by now.

Thanks,
Kev
