I'm trying Google Desktop Search beta and it does seem to integrate with Google.com. I don't, however, know whether internet access is required.

Hi Raja,

Thank you for your note. You don't need to be connected to the internet to use Google Desktop Search. Desktop Search and your personal results are all stored on your own computer, so you can search with Desktop Search anytime you want to find something.

You won't be able to access live webpages while you're not connected, but for any page you've already seen, you can take a look at the snapshot Desktop Search took when you were last there. These snapshots are called 'cache' copies. They're stored on your computer as part of your Desktop Search index. To see how a webpage looked the last time you saw it, click the 'Cached' link next to a webpage search result.

Regards,
The Google Team

As far as I know, it's only avalible for Windows XP and 2003 I think. When (I hope it does) it gets released for Windows 98 or Linux, I'll get it.

I love it. And I think it works on XP and 2000 SP3. Or it might be 2003 but I am pretty sure that it is 2000.

Google Desktop is awesome Exclamation I can’t believe how fast it is especially in comparison to M$’s search. Laughing I look farward the their final release.

I did unfortunately encounter some problems with it. I attempted to install Google Desktop on a computer with multiple user accounts. All the accounts have Admin privileges so when I installed Google Desktop onto one of the accounts I assumed it could be run by the rest of the users on the desktop. This was not the case so when I went to show off this new tool I was quite surprises to discover that Google Desktop couldn’t be found on the other user accounts.

Oddly the problems didn't stop there. I uninstalled Google Desktop from one of the users and tried to reinstall it into another user’s account. This also failed returning a 'not compatible' error message. I’ve read through the Google Desktop’s Help Center page but haven’t found a solution to this problem yet. Sad

If anyone has encountered a similar problem and discovered a solution your input would be greatly appreciated.
