I'm thinking about trying Linux for the first time, and I'm wondering which version is the best free one. I'm looking to only have to download one Cd's worth.
Thanks for your help. _________________ MS Discussion |

Hey broken.
I use Linux, and trust me, downloading Linux is worth it.
I have Fedora Core 2, soon to be Fedora Core 3. Fedora Core 3 is the latest release of Fedora. I downloaded Fedora Core 2 a week before its release.
You could also get SUSE, or Gentoo, or one of the many others, but as this is your first installation, I recommend Fedora. Its the most mainstream.
You can download the ISO images from the website (bottom) and if you use high-speed, it may take you several hours for all 4. You then burn them as a CD image, and install it from there. It's not as hard as it sounds (I did it!)
If you are sure you only want to download one CD (I strongly suggest 4 with Fedora, it's worth it) then you could get SUSE personal edition. You could get the DVD image (takes longer) or the CD image (It's version 9.1 on CD, 9.2 on DVD)
You could also download the DVD image for Fedora, if you have a DVD burner.
It is possible to install from one CD, but remember, you get what you pay for, or in this case, download.
Hope this helps. Good luck.

SUSE Linux, best for first-time users and advanced/veteran users alike. Current version is 9.1 I believe. It's AWESOME, it has cool desktop 3d effects including transition effects and...download it now to find out the cool features! It's about 700 MB...It's worth the time needed to download...
Also it comes bundled with lots of useful software...like Jikes(this was helpful for me), most GNU compilers, etc.
EDIT: Whoa Julien posted the same minute as me but must've been a few seconds early.
Yeah, you need a CD-writer along with a writable/re-writable CD and then install it from there...though you can choose another option and that is 'slip-stream' installation, where SUSE will be slowly installed as it gets downloaded. Choose whichever method suits you best. _________________ "A lie gets halfway around the world before the truth has a chance to get it's pants on." - Winston Churchill |

Thank you very much for your help, guys! I am currenty downloading SUSE Linux to see what it's like. If I like it, I might consider downloading Fedora. _________________ MS Discussion |

After a four hour download, Linux is finally installed! I think is a lot better than Windows XP.
EDIT: I have just found a problem, and I was wondering if anyone could help. The sound from the TV card doesn't work. That comes through the line-in plug. Also, when ever it plays a 'system sound', it just make a noise like white noise. CDs work fine, though. _________________ MS Discussion |

You probably need an additional driver for your TV card or maybe it's not supported ... many hardware isn't supported by Linux, sadly, and some are only partially supported... _________________ "A lie gets halfway around the world before the truth has a chance to get it's pants on." - Winston Churchill |

But what about it making a noise like white noise everytime it makes a 'system sound'? _________________ MS Discussion |

I can't say I have ever encountered that problem, but maybe if you looked in your preferences, and looked at the files selected for the system sounds? Then perhaps playing theses files alone. It may just be that the sound files are non-existent/corrupt/missing, etc. _________________ http://julien.sizzly.com
