Finswimming is the competitive version of snorkelling and sub-aqua diving that is equivilant to swimming. There are two forms of finswimming; outdoor and pool. There are three pool versions; surface (speed snorkelling), apnea and immersion (speed sub-aqua diving). There are major differences between finswimming and the equivilant recreational version. All finswimming races are organised in much the same way that a swimming competitions are set up. The equipment, however, is very different from the recreational forms. Ordinary fins are replaced by Monofins and the side snorkel is replaced by a centre-mounted snorkel.
Finswimming is also much faster than conventional swimming. The world record for 50 m freestyle is 21.81 seconds. The surface record for the same distance is 16.07 seconds (surface) and 14.83 seconds (apnea).
