Microsoft sees profits double

Microsoft reported its quarterly earnings yesterday, beating the Street's expectations by earning 32¢ per share on revenues of US$10.82 billion. The profits more than doubled from the same quarter last year, which saw a profit 14¢ per share on revenues of US$10.15 billion. Notably, most of the company's business units did better during the past quarter, with some of the improvement attributable to increased sales. The only business units not seeing sales growth over the past quarter were the Microsoft Business Solutions unit with flat revenues, and the Information Worker unit (responsible for Office) which saw sales drop.

The largest growth came from the Xbox and Microsoft's server products. The Home and Entertainment BU, which is responsible for the Xbox, made a profit of US$84 million on revenues of US$1.41 billion, compared with losses of US$397 million last year. Once condemned to death, the Xbox is currently as strong as it has ever been. A lot of the credit for the strong showing has to go to Halo 2, which was one of the most-anticipated console releases ever. So far, over 6.4 million copies of that title alone have been sold. Microsoft has also seen component costs drop for the Xbox itself, along with an increase in Xbox Live subscriptions.

With nothing like Halo 2 coming down the pike for Microsoft, results from the past quarter may prove to be a bit of anomaly. However, the Xbox 2 is expected to ship by year end, and the company is confident that profits will be better on the second-generation console.

Office remains a challenge for Microsoft. While they rolled out Office 2004 for the Mac last year — which was a very worthwhile upgrade from Office vX — the company is having difficulty convincing companies that they need to snap up the latest release of the application suite every time a new version comes out. For many, there are not enough value-added differences between Office XP and Office 2003 (or even Office 2000) to justify the expense of upgrading.

Much of the media coverage Microsoft gets has to do with the challenges the company faces, whether from Apple in the online music market, Sony in the console market, Linux in the enterprise, or legal difficulties in Europe. A case in point is the performance of the Server and Tools unit — for all the love that Linux gets (and deservedly so), Microsoft too has been making progress in the server space, most often at the expense of big-iron Unix. The company's strong earnings demonstrate that for all the challenges it is facing, it is managing to cope quite nicely, thank you very much.

Halo 2 and Xbox owns!
