As I'm sure you all know, google has a translator. I have used it, and personally I don't think it's so good. That's a first for google. Usually google and their features are really high quality and useful, but I find the translator not that accurate. But can we blame them? The translation is machine, so we can't expect it to be perfect. Hopefully they will add more languages, and improve the quality of the translation.

Sometimes I've worked as an interpreter, translator, or as you wanna call it (depending on the situation you have to do different things). And I can assure that, up to now, no machine can do these tasks the way a human being do them.
Sometimes these translators (the machines, I mean) can help you have an idea of the text, but unfortunately accuracy is usually very low.
Maybe in a few years will see the opposite, but not now...

Yes, I agree that the translator is somewhat disappointing for a google service. I found that LogoMedia is pretty good for a software translator, supporting many languages.

You have to keep things like this in perspective, IMO. Could you do any better, say, with a Spanish-English dictionary than with Google Language Tools, if you didn't know anything about the language? I think not. Any translator tool will be that way, to some extent.

On the other hand, if you do know a decent amount about, still let's say Spanish, a dictionary or translator will be a valuable tool. Let me emphasize, a tool--not something to do it all for you.

I agree with antioco2003. It's hard for the translation machines to do phases or words with multiple meanings.

Once I used a program to translate "laugh your haart out", it ends up like an opening-heart surgery.

If you want a translater try this site: http://world.altavista.com/

It is a web-based translation service. You can copy and paste wha tyou want translated, and it can translate it to whatever language you choose, that they have available of course. It is not 100%, but it is not bad!

That's the one that I use as well. I rarely need it and I've only had marginal results with it so far. I'll do a simple query containing a couple of lines of Spanish, Portugese or German and I'll literally get no results. I wonder if I'm looking up some sort of slang when that happens? It would probably be a useful tool if I took the time to research my subject better and had a least minimal working knowledge of the language! Lol If I can't use it 'on the fly', its of no use to me.

LOL I did say "Not bad"... please be advised that I didn't say "The best there is". LOL (No worries, there are tons out there, it would take a LONG time to search through them all to see which one(s) are actually compatible with slang.)

Now I really am going to bed.

Machine translators. Sometimes just an inkling to what a foreign page/phrase means is enough info. Better than nothing. Smile

I agree sometimes an inkling is enough. Spanish words are easier to figure out for me than some of the other languages. My friends website was defaced and they left a message and I never could get it translated, probably for the best I might add. Smile
