I may have to give up my Trillian program for this one, it looks to be a good one.

Quote:
Microsoft has released information of its new software client, codenamed “Istanbul.” The client offers its users communication capabilities including instant messaging, extensible presence, PC-based voice and video, and telephony integration. In other words Istanbul is is considered the next great Chat Client. Microsoft is to debut Istanbul sometime in the first half of 2005. Microsoft will rival many big companies with the release of Istanbul, by putting all of their great office applications into one.

Istanbul is reported to let its users know when the person they are trying to contact is online, able to take a phone call, or would prefer an email sent to them. Microsoft is trying to enhance the buddy list option of instant messaging by giving the user more options on the best way to communicate with their fellow worker.

Istanbul will somewhat resemble Windows Messenger, which is currently found on Windows XP. It will also have a feature that offers a link to your favorite chat clients such as AOL Instant Messenger, Yahoo Messenger, and MSN Messenger. All three of the companies signed an agreement with Microsoft to allow their clients to link to Istanbul.

Microsoft gave the following statement about codename “Istanbul"

As the preferred client for Microsoft Office Live Communications Server, "Istanbul" will enhance the business user experience by:

* Enhancing presence and real-time collaboration. With "Istanbul," presence becomes richer as additional availability data, including out-of-office information, is included. In addition, users are able to control their communications based on their presence.
* Improving usability. "Istanbul" will help business users take advantage of advanced communications capabilities more easily by consolidating applications into a single interface including instant messaging, conferencing and traditional telephony.
* Member of the Microsoft Office System. With "Istanbul" and Live Communications Server, presence and communications capabilities become a richer part of the Microsoft Office experience, including integration with Microsoft Office Live Meeting. End users will be able to initiate collaboration directly from their already familiar desktop applications.

What's next, Constantinople! I'm sorry, that was bad. Very Happy

I've originally heard this from mess.be and neowin.net Smile but thanks for posting it, many members might not have known of it.
Constanstinople was the name of present day Istanbul before the Turkish conquered it.

They are calling the new IM client, Office Communicator 2005, formerly codenamed 'Istanbul'. This is considered a breakthrough in Office communication.
