Sun Microsystems has kicked off Java's 10th birthday celebrations with a party for employees who have worked on the programming language over the past decade.

The event took place at the company's Santa Clara campus. Sun plans a more public celebration at the JavaOne developer conference in San Francisco 27-30 June.

That's nice to hear, but I regard this as Java's 10th anniversary since it's official inception in 1995. Java was actually conceived in 1991, though. To take advantage of the wide possibilities of communication opened up through the internet, they promptly started development on an optimized version of their bytecode-driven Java programming language for the Windows platform, specifically Windows 95(Windows: Codename Chicago). It was more of an incomplete programming language back then, but the programmers tried their best to incorporate as much features as they could into the language so that it could deliver fast performance while maintaining functional accuracy.
Look at Java now, it has so many offshoots today. The Java specification itself has branched off into various 'super-sets' and 'sub-sets'. It has come a long way and evolved a lot. Sun Microsystems has something to be very proud of, due to the widespread use and popularity of Java and similar derived programming languages. Furthermore, it is now a multi-platform programming language and is highly portable. It has been flourishing majorly since the "dot com explosion" and now it has reached it's apex. The zenith of Java's popularity will be retained for quite some time, and we all know that. One of the main reasons of Java's success is that the original developers of Java openly welcomed people to Java with no restrictions. They allowed people to create their own compilers and tools. This gave Java a kick-start, and boosted it's popularity among striving programmers. They all coveted a programming language supported by compilers which were easy to use while the language itself remained as easy to learn and master. They got Java and loved it. Another reason is that they've been broadly supporting open-source projects and many of the people involved with the developement of Java are active contributors to the open-source community. Java is favoured by the infantry of the open-source movement.
That's pretty much Java in a nutshell for you, folks.
It is not possible to wish "happy birthday" to Java, but I would love to congratulate the developers at Sun Microsystems for making the gradual evolution and improvement of the Java specification possible.
Whew, I'm exhausted, that took a while to write.

I wish I would take the time to learn Java. I'm going to have to if I want to be a master programmer.

You make a good point about this not really being Java's 10th year anniversary, since they started programming it in 1991 and not 1995, but look at it this way...do we celebrate the day a baby is born or the day a baby is conceived?

I think you comprehended my post in the wrong way. I did not state that I hold the opinion that today is not Java's 10th anniversary, I merely pointed out a fact. But there is no way to not concede to your argument, so I acknowledge your opinion as that is the one I held originally as well.
Thanks for leaving me endless possibilities to expand my post count. Laughing

Then why do you say that it's not possible to wish "happy birthday" to Java?

'Java' is not a living entity, hence 'anniversary' would be more appropriate than 'birthday' in this case.
Everything has become so politically incorrect and irregular nowadays. Sad

BTW: I'm Eric.

As you've said this twice and your not spamming I've changed the title of this topic from birthday to anniversary.

Thanks.
