Friends, Roundheads, and Klansman, Spare me your jeers!
My, my, an entire thread devoted to my recent exchange with Micro$oft of India.
Gentlemen, I'm honoured... and at the same time I'm chagrined that so many have offered critical and derogatory comments without bothering to read or comprehend that to which they so readily lend the wisdom of their years of inexperience:
"Geekerati" claims, "Now this is crazy, I received a warning about this change with Outlook, I don't know why he supposedly didn't."
Hmmm, NOBODY -- INCLUDING MICROSOFT SUPPORT PERSONNEL -- RECEIVED ANY WARNING ABOUT THIS CHANGE WITH OUTLOOK! Perhaps "Geekerati" is clairvoyant, or perhaps he/she is referring to something else than discussed in the article? Or perhaps he/she suffers from the very insanity of which he/she so readily accuses another?
"Supposedly didn't"? What basis is there for this insulting and inaccurate assumption, that I had somehow read that which was non-existent, and then claimed to have not done so?
"This Mr. Carl D Goldin is much more patient than I." Yes, indeed. It takes great patience and persistence to obtain assistance from today's "support" personnel, or to reply politely to such groundless accusations and misstatements.
"Geekerati" further implores the reader to "Judge for yourself!", kindly supplying the very link which he (apparently) had only perused, but never read, prior to comment. And for this (supplying the link), I thank ye kindly, lad(y).
"Laurent Van Winckel" laughs aloud, but has no interest in reading the object of his scoffing.
"Tokkolo's" comments were kindly and well-received. Dank U Weel!
In response to which, Mr "Laurent Van Winckel", presumably still not having read the subject of the discussion, asks cryptically, "Yes, but what are they talking about?" He leaves us in the dark as to who "they" might be, thus making it difficult to assist the poor chap with his query.
"EX Eric" introduces an interesting side topic (e.g. les---n PORNSTARS) without the courtesy of supplying the link.
"Ex Eric" further wonders "why anyone would leave hotmail just because of that" and tells us that "I still use my hotmail address for various things for which my Gmail account won't be able to act as a replacement. I must then consider myself lucky to still be able to check my hotmail through Outlook. MSN loves me since I am a loyal fan."
Perhaps "Ex Eric" didn't bother to read the entire thread either. Let me summarize. Microsoft disabled the account in question --- without prior warning and without explanation [as they have done with a random selection of hotmail accounts for reasons already discussed and documented]. Thus, the account was entirely useless. So, let me rephrase "Ex Eric's" question: Why would anyone NOT leave hotmail just because of that"?
What purpose would there be in retaining an unusable account? [Ironically, now that we no longer use this account, it has been re-enabled. I know this because I periodically test such things.]
Supposedly, Micro$oft disabled Outlook (Express) access for NEW accounts, but retained them --- for the interim --- for existing accounts which already had hotmail access. This was the published policy. In fact, while this issue was occurring, Micro$oft sent this account multiple notices informing me (inaccurately) that, because I was an existing customer, my Outlook access would be retained! The random "HIPA" challenge is an entirely different issue.
"Geekerati" then informs us, "The gentleman may have had a new account and that would explain his main problem with the Outlook Client, I never could find where he stated the tenure of it. But, it's bizarre that when he logged into it his MSN messenger automatically loaded. Too weird!"
May I refer "Geekerati" to the second item in the posted article. As to the MSN Messenger automatically loading, this is what currently happens when one logs into www.hotmail.com without MSN Messenger already running, and one CANNOT terminate the process without logging off of www.hotmail.com. It's not "too weird". It's (announced and demonstrable) Micro$oft policy.
"Geekerati" then quotes an (irrelevant) letter he/she received from Microsoft --- which I obviously received a copy of as well (as I reference it in my webpage). Please note, that this attempt to sell us another service to replace a defective one, specifically states that existing accounts will still have OE access. There is no mention of the "HIPA challenge", which is obviously the subject of the entire thread.
"Geekerati" then informs us that "Upon further examination, I think the man has issues! I mean he is rude, borderline racist, egotistical and could not accept the fact they weren't willing to accommodate him. He referred to his OS as "Windoze"! He also claimed MS had sabotaged his hotmail account (making it unusable) under the guise of "preventing spam". I bet anything it was a NEW ACCOUNT.
Of course I have "issues" (as do you, obviously). Micro$oft has -- once again -- rendered useless a pre-existing service without prior warning, notification, or admission. Your epithets are uncalled for and highly-inflammatory. I was extremely polite, not rude, with Micro$oft personnel, despite their refusal and inability to do their jobs --- or address a customer properly. There is nothing "racist" in any of my comments. Micro$oft has chosen to save money by hiring "support" personnel, who lack sufficient knowledge of the the language in which they are ostensibly to support the product. [Eventually, this accused "racist" resubmitted the complaint in both (literate) Hindi and Urdu, with the same resultant run-a-round, albeit in more grammatical form.]
No, I cannot and will not accept "support" personnel who are not "willing to accommodate me" by supporting their product, instead of providing insulting, and time-wasting non-responses. This is hardly egotistical. If a customer can't (and doesn't) demand to be treated properly who will do so?
"Windoze" is an entirely accurate and highly-descriptive nickname for billgrates' monster.
Micro$oft did, in fact, sabotage my account, and it was their very messages that claimed the "HIPA challenge" was an anti-SPAM measure.
Finally, were I a betting man, "Geekerati" would lose his/her ill-considered bet, whilst simultaneously demonstrating his/her qualifications for a MS support job, e.g. failure to pay attention to ANY of the details provided, but rather jumping on the first recognizable keyword.
"Arisna's" comments are kindly as well. Thank you.
However, "Arisna" felt it necessary to add "The only place this guy went wrong was giving Microsoft so many chances to help him. Though he stated multiple times he would stop using all of their products, those threats were clearly empty. If he really wanted to hurt Microsoft, he should have backed up his useful files, switched to Linux, and gotten himself a Gmail account. Just like I did, actually. "
1) In the same thread, I am accused of being impatient and hot-tempered, and simultaneously "giving Micro$oft too many chances....... Some days one simple can't win!
2) My threats were/are hardly empty. Long before the thread was complete, I stopped using my FOUR hotmail accounts (even the ones which had not yet been attacked by the "HIPA challenge"). Still in use are several Yahoo and ISP accounts, as well as two Gmail accounts. Each of them have their specific advantages and disadvantages, and anyone who is unaware of this is insufficiently informed to make an intelligent recommendation. The big advantage to Hotmail accounts (up until recently) was the ability of Outlook Express to automatically synchronize local folders with the web-based folders. Too my knowledge, NO OTHER EMAIL PROVIDER (POP3 or otherwise) provides this facility. Unfortunately, this sole advantage is now severely outweighed by the "HIPA challenge" and the automatic launching of Messenger.
3) My "useful files" (meaning everything stored on my computers except caches and temporary structures) are backed up daily, as well as being dynamically copied to a second computer --- for instantaneous transfer to that system should the primary system be disabled -- thus we experience no down time due to hardware failure. Unkind of you to assume there was no backup in place.
4) Switching to Linux is not a viable option for most serious computer users. [Yes, some of us actually use our computers for things other than Internet access and gaming.] I have a fortune in sophisticated software which I depend on, and which will not run on Linux without expensive revision, replacement and time-consuming conversion of data files. And, please don't tell me about the "WIndoze emulators" built into Mandrake (which I have running on one of my computer systems). Emulators are far from perfect, and they hardly solve conversion problems. It would take over $10,000 and over 2 years for a full conversion to Linux. I may do so someday, but hardly as a result of this hotmail incident. [However, it is unlikely I will purchase another Micro$soft OS. Linux or something else will replace it.]
"DrakeWurrum" displays his inability to read, and shows off his limited knowledge by stating, "It sounds to me like the guy fell prey to one of those fake staff e-mails that are sent from hackers to try and get your username and password. I can't believe the guy decided to actually click on that link. Why else would this happen to only one account?"
As I related to Mr. "Wurrum", in response to the first of two insulting emails he addressed to me, there is nothing to suggest that this was a "fake staff e-mail", or that anyone clicked on the link. As should be obvious from the first two sections of the webpage, this is the standard "email" that replaces the entire contents of one's Hotmail Inbox (and all other folders) when the "HIPA challenge" is issued. It is definitely generated by Micro$oft software, and the addresses used are easily traceable to their source. It has happened to THOUSANDS of accounts, but Mr. "Wurrum" would rather entertain us with his limited knowledge of another subject.
Mr. "Wurrum" further queries "that the Hotmail and Microsoft staff could not figure this out!" The answer is simple. They couldn't figure it out because it simply wasn't/isn't the case, and (had it been) MS "support Staff" lack the computer expertise to do so.
Mr. "Wurrum" then accuses me of "not [being] patient, [being] merely determined. Note how quickly he exploded at the staff. He is far from patient and is very short-tempered."
Again, this is simply not born out by the thread. I was patient through the entire exchange with Micro$oft, I never "exploded", and I even provided Mr. "Wurrum" with a polite response to the first of his insulting emails. [I bounced the second, and will do so with any subsequent communication from this ignorant bigot.]
"Geekerati" than (almost) apologized for unwarranted criticism. Thank you for that.
Not to leave any stones unturned, "DrakeWurrum" comes back with more venom, and name-dropping! He calls me an old man. Then he boasts that he is "currently e-mailing back and forth with [me] about this topic", and finally informs us he has "a feeling this guy is well-known for being very hostile at the slightest suggestion."
Mr. "Wurrum" did send me two abusive emails on this subject, displaying both his bigotry, and his lack of erudition. I replied politely to the first and bounced the second. This is hardly "emailing back and forth".
Mr. "Wurrum" is quite correct. I have absolutely no tolerance for idiots and bigots [look up the dictionary definition before you protest this designation], whether they be Micro$oft personnel, or forum members.
"Geekerati" then reverts to the offensive, "Maybe we should all try in contacting him, he would get pissed for sure."
Why would you wish to harass someone who has done nothing save express his dissatisfaction with an extremely poor service, and provide the "solution" to the problem for thousands of others who have been similarly inconvenienced by Micro$oft? I provided an email link to my article, for feedback from my readers. Except for Mr. "Wurrum" and one other bigot [sic], the response has been sympathetic, supportive, and grateful. Many others have been receiving the same run-around from MS (including one chap who paid for an 8-hour telephone call), and it is important they know they are not alone. Many have suggested other email providers. I have responded promptly and politely to each and every one of them, as is my policy.
Yes, I probably would "get pissed for sure" should you decide to harass me en masse. Did you also consider, while you are chortling, that I might amuse myself by replying with something which could bypass your firewall, anti-virus, and (yes, overrated) Linux software? It isn't wise to deliberately antagonize someone, without being very sure of your footing. Nor is there anything amusing about harassment.
"Arisna" is curious as to my operating system: I am currently run MS-DOS 6.0 on a 386-40. [This is still my "work horse", and handles all my business and accounting applications, as well as computing ephemeris data. It is more than sufficient for these applications]. I have two additional systems running Windows 98SE. These are used (by my spouse and myself) for Internet access, web design, and general word-processing. My fourth system is a multi-boot system, on which I have Windows 2000 and Linux Mandrake running. These are experimental development systems. All five systems are networked. [I also have access to, and write programs for, a large number of mainframes.]
I trust this satisfies all unanswered questions, and puts an end to the matter. |

What an elobarate post...I'm EX Eric, what I posted about why people would not want to switch from hotmail was merely in jest. I dislike HoTMaiL, I never use it for casual exchange of e-mail.
I've read the entire post, and I must say, it requires a lot of insight and research to address everything discussed in threads. Well done. _________________ Darren loves Tokkolo who has e-feelings for Geekerati. |

1. Geekerati introduced the page to the forum for the information of everyone around. I think this was the purpose aimed by writng the page. The purpose was served, is it not?
2. The author of the page, has certainly taken objections to some of the exchanges in the forum as well as his mails to him. I can only assure cdgoldin that it was not the intention of the members to offend him and at the same time request him that he would have ignored such posts as he had done with some of the microsoft personnal.
Any how the whole episode indicates the necessity of right behavious in the internet, even though you are invisible!
However thank you, Mr.cdgaldin, for being honest and straight by expressing your feelings! Now that you are a member of this community, we would be happy that you put everything aside and extend wholehearted cooperation in making this community, more useful! |

Dear Mr. C.D. Goldin
I'm guilty of jumping to conclusions and passing judgement on you, as well as assuming your account was a new one. It was irresponsible of me to post an article that I hadn't taken the proper time to read and understand what its contents contained. I have embarrassed myself for this mistake, demonstrating very poor judgement in the process.
I sincerely hope that you will accept my apology for making any assumptions/statements on your behalf. I was wrong! This thread has taught me valueable lesson and I shall not forget its consequences.
Thank you for sharing the facts with us regarding your ordeal with Micro$oft.
Again, I'm very sorry for my actions/words.
Take Care
Edited: Sorry for the misspelled words before. _________________

It's apology.
[troll]Haha, you all got owned with a single post. Misinformed morons, were the comments on his website that hard to decipher? I didn't take the time to read so I didn't make any remarks. Laurent didn't read either but passed a few negative comments against Mr. Goldin.
[/troll]
I don't mean the moron part, by the way. _________________ Darren loves Tokkolo who has e-feelings for Geekerati. |
