People ask me all the time. Is Adsense worthwhile?

A short answer. YES.

Now, Im not going to promise you that you will make millions, but you can easily make enough to cover the expenses of your forum and maybe toss a few dollars in your pocket in the process.

I wanted to talk a little about some things you can do to maximize your adsense revenue on your forum. Each forum is different and will earn differently. How much will depend on your topic and traffic.

If your not signed up with Google Adsense, you can do so at GOOGLE ADSENSE

How does Adsense work? How does it make me money?
Google Adsense spiders scan the page that the adsense ad is on and delivers ads that are relevant to the test of the page. (for example, look at the top of this page - Most ads should be Adsense related) When a user clicks on one of those ads because it interested him/her, you get paid for that click. Might be a few pennies, might be several dollars for that single click.

- Setting Up Adsense Ads -

Channels
You should use channels, which is a built in monitoring system Adsense provides. Basically, it tracks how much specific ads earn. I assign a channel to a specif page or groups of pages. i.e. Homepage is one channel, archive is another channel. This way I can look at the end of the month and determine if one area isnt doing well.

What pages to Put Adsense on?
In the basic forum set up, I suggest placing the ads on the Forumhome, Forumdisplay and Showthread templates. Just place your ad code below $navbar on those templates.

I also suggest you place them in the Archive - and this is easiest if you are using the Easy Archive Hack. If you have other hacks, such as vB Garage or an arcade, you may want to place the ads there as well. I make some pretty good money off my archive.

What size ads Should I Use?
This is going to vary somewhat based on the particular page you place them on. I generally like the 468x60. The main reasin is, it has 2 ads. 2 choices. And that will be the 2 top paying ads. Why give a user the chance to click on a lower paying ad?

Sometimes, the larger ads do make sense though. You have to test the various ad sizes out. Some suggest that you use vertical ads. These are difficult to place on a forum however unless your experienced at template coding.

What about ad colors?
It has been shown that ads which blend into your page perform better. Have the background and border the same color as the page the ad is on, have the text be the same color as other text on your page. I'm not always sure that looks right however. Again, try different things.

Create more content pages for your site -- and display Adsense on these pages.
All else being equal, the more pages you have displaying AdWords, the more money you'll earn. Create more great content pages. I recommend that you focus on creating pages on topics you have a passion for. For example, if you have a forum on computer repair, you might want to have a series of how to articles about how to repair your computer, and have ads on them.

It's especially useful if these content pages are very clearly focused. Then, Google will be able to serve highly relevant Adsense ads to your visitors. This means your visitors will be more interested in the ads, which results in higher click through rates -- and more money for you!

Build Traffic!
Its simple. The more people on your site, the more you'll make. The more active the site is the more active it will become.

Don't cheat.
Do not click on the AdWords displayed on your own site to increase your revenue. Do not ask your members to click your ads either. Google frowns on this. Plus, Google is very good at detecting this kind of fraud. In addition, there are many self appointed 'Adsense Police Officers" floating around who will report you if they see posts asking members to post on ads.

If you cheat, you'll likely get kicked out of the AdSense program -- and then you won't earn anything. They even keep the money you've earned to that point but havent paid you yet. A few dollars today isnt worth the loss of revenue in the future.

Excellent advice! Thank you. I'm doing a lot of what you're talking about already, but I'll certainly be doing more of things like channels.

As for the cheating--I don't understand why people can't just play by the damn rules. If everyone played fair we'd all make a lot more money with a lot less hassle.
