Good points! Here's one more I'd like to add: participating in forums that allows signatures. Threads will get indexed by the search engines and the links in your signature will count as a link to your site, hence increasing your link popularity and search placement.
Personally, I would not participate in a forum that does not allow me to attach my signature to my posts, regardless of how popular that forum is.
