I think I've posted it here before, but here you go again:

The first website

The first website Berners-Lee built (and therefore the first web site) was at http :// info.cern.ch/ which has been archived and was first put online on August 6, 1991. It provided an explanation about what the World Wide Web was, how one could own a browser, how to set up a web server, and so on. It was also the world's first web directory, since Berners-Lee later maintained a list of other web sites apart from his own.

I've always wondered what the first web site was, now I know. Thank you Darren, I've attempted to Google it before with no luck. I wish I was about 10 years older so I would be in the know of all of this stuff. It's very interesting to me. When the WWW was first brought about, there was a browser that was developed as well? Also, when you opened that browser, where did it go? Nowhere? Berner-Lee's site?

Also, Googler, apparently they say they have more than 15 years experience. Maybe there is more than one person and they are adding their experience together?

The browser which was released coinciding with the public opening of the internet was the mosaic browser. It eventually evolved into Netscape. To tell you the truth, three different companies bought the rights to the browser. Internet Explorer is based on Mosaic itself...

Hi Folks,

Thanks for noticing that I joined today. I'm not sure what all of the fuss is about. I never said that I have more than 15 years of Internet experience, but _online_ experience. There were online services that predated the World Wide Web.

I started at CompuServe, the world's first online service, in February of 1990, more than 15 years ago now. At that time, CompuServe had already been providing services to consumers for a few years. See a brief history here:

www.nationmaster.com/encyclopedia/CompuServe

My first online access was using a 2400 baud modem. We thought things were cooking when the speed jumped to 9600 baud!

Thanks and glad to be here!

Glad to oblige. Since most folks these days don't know the original difference between online and Internet, I simply say online. For those who press for more info, I give it.

Cheers,

Yes that's true, that's a bit like some people that don't know the difference between the web and the Internet.
