Google groups is a special kind of forum. It is a web based form to access Usenet. A Usenet forum is also called a newsgroup.

Orkut has a similar capability named Communities.

I still dont really understand why it is such a big deal. Is there anything special about it that everyone wants to join?

Maybe that's just because I have a computeractive subscription too.
However Orkut never got me a gmail account.I wish it could.
