when surfing for any site...

1. in what direction you usually read, is it horizontal or vertical?
2. on what part of the site that first caught your attention?
3. what part of the site that you consider as hotspot/coldspot?
4. what backgrounds & colors that you feel relax & comfortable browsing the site?

opinions are much appreciated. thanks.
Very Happy

Here's some relevant information you may find helpful from an assignment of mine at college.

Format
The Web provides for the delivery of a wide range of content formats such as Text and Graphics. The best format for a particular type of information should be chosen carefully.

Graphics
Graphics are generally the first information source seen on the page by the viewer. They provide a means of visually breaking up the page. Together with supporting text they can be a powerful means of communication. But consider a Power Point graphic of a set of text bullet points, would the purpose not better be served by the use of properly formatted text?

On the other hand, graphics do tend to overload the systems, so their careful use is advised.

Text
Text is the second item taken in by the viewer, particularly small items of large text. Large blocks of unbroken text should be avoided as it is unlikely that they will read except by the enthusiast.

Multimedia
Multimedia content such as sound and video has large overheads in system delivery. Its use can be very effective but it should be carefully controlled or it will bring many systems to a halt.

Interactive
Web page audiences love things to click on. They like to feel part of, as well as in control of what they are viewing. Links, Forms, Active Maps, Client Side and Server Side Processing, all provide opportunities for viewer intervention.

Alternative
Alternatives should always be provided. There should be text alternatives to graphics, both because people understand in different ways and so that partially sighted people can hear the spoken links. It is a good idea to always consider alternative ways of delivering content and generally provide at least two.

No problem, is the info you want for your site or is it just general information you would like that would fit any site.

1- vertical, I usually scan through just to see it there is anyhting that catches my attention.

2-The name of the site or the title of the topic ext

3-hotspots are usually things that change like weird or interesting news topics and what not.

4most sites have grey white or blues for their backgrouns so I suppose thats what I have come acustome to but bright colors and contrast are what usually attract my attention

1 - I believe that most people scan a site to see if there is anything that interests them - headlines, bold, colored text

2 - The first fold. You have to grab visitors attention immediately. If headline and text don't get my attention right away, I usually go on to another site.

3 - hotspot = top center and top left

4 - colors not too striking, too many bright colors are hard on the eyes. I have been to sites which I left immediately because of garrish colors.
