the problem does seem to be specefic to Maxthon, I uninstalled maxthon and the links within GTalk worked to the inbox and so on. I then reinstalled maxthon and left IE as the default browser and things still worked, however GTalk used IE obviously. The problem seems to be when setting Maxthon as the default browser.
