I think so google should make a cool application like the Google Internet Operating System.Imagine urself accessing a desktop like OS over the net.
Just log on the site and now u will be looking at ur OS. It can have applications like word processing and other MS office type applications. Point here is that you don't have to carry your lap top every where just log on any PC having net and you have your online PC all data secured by google since google will not have any problem of storage all ur files can be stored by google ,simply put google can built a massive Web application similar to a desktop OS and internally google can manage all the data and all. _________________ right rookie

Yeah, even I think thatz fine we should have good desktop OS howver what I want to mention is that consider the scenarios where we have limited disk space on our machines or say limited processing power. Now say you are compiling a massive distribued application your desktop OS will not be able to handle that. Also you have maintain your PCs like OS ,various softwares etc.If all these is taken care by a super computer and we have light a weight desktop OS since in the future it is all going to be interaction with the Web so why not have a Web based OS. _________________ right rookie

The web-based OS does sound like an excellent idea, but the main issues I would have are security and stability.
As it would be internet based (and remotely hosted at that), how can you ensure that it is safe and secure?
Also, what if the servers were to go down? There's no "hard" backup, and if your internet connection is unavailable you wouldn't be able to access any of the data.
I think a downloadable open-source platform OS would be a much better idea, or even a shell - take a look at Litestep for the sort of thing I mean. That way there's no problems with compatibility and file extentions etc. _________________ Adam Croft .com |

Good point csezol - Not only are you having to battle against processor speed (which, knowing Google, would be damn fast anyway), but also the speed of your internet connection - something that Google cannot control. Or can they?... Google Broadband anyone? _________________ Adam Croft .com |

Security : I don't think so security is a concern since it is same even on a desktop OS,I think so security should be much of a concern.
Stability: Well Consider patching ur OS if it a Microsoft one or even getting new packages for Linux.
Internet Connection : Well going into future Ineternet will be like water supply or electric supply so even net connection is a valid concern going into future it will not be.
Data : If data is available every where then why do we need CDs say you can logon o ur mobile or on ur desktop u will be looking at the same data and ur profile settings.
Now think of the great amount of processing power u can utilize in a web based OS as well as u will have no limit on data storage . No need to download anything . _________________ right rookie

Well, it might be good if you have a fast connection.
[BUT MY T3 LINE SMOKES YOU ALL! ]
If you dont care for waiting, downtime and maintenance.
If you dont mind how easy a hacker could get in (Brute Forcing)
If you dont mind some pretty limited storage
and if you dont realise THAT YOU HAVE TO HAVE AN OS TO CONNECT!!!
so, if youre running windows, why run another os
Because there is no reason!
Now you can understand |
