Go to the command line and type $ su - c "/sbin/shutdown -h now", and yes, you must use the quotes. After it shows "The system is halted" or something else along that line, just turn off the power button/switch.
Doesn't work with all distros, but...you can also try pressing ALT + CTRL + DEL at once and see what happens in case you want to avoid the text-based command shell.

At first I welcom you to the world of linux!
If you have the root password you can use these two command simply:
1)halt
2)shutdown(with this command you can set after for example 3 min later the computer shut down like shutdown +3)
and if you want to restart the system type
reboot
I know that ctrl+alt+backspace you can logout and you back to welcome page
there is also another command
init+number
I forget the number, but you can refer to man pages and read it.numbers are 0-3-5-6.one of them is for rebooting the system, another one is for halting system, another one is for bring you from the graphical mode to text mode and the last one is for bringing you from text mode to graphical mode(you can also use startx command to do this also)
Have a good time with your linux
