I've been using www.sharebuilder.com and have been very happy. If you just want to buy stocks and are not too worried about timing then you can purchase shares at $4 per transaction (occurs only on Tuesdays) or if you want to make a transaction right away it cost $15.00 per transaction.

It has been a good place for someone like me who is new to purchasing stocks.

There are many places you can purchase stocks through. I have been pleased with Scottrade.com
