Yes, Cat is back with another story! It looks long, but I hope you get into and if you do, it will finish before you know it! Enjoy..
“Yes, I’ll see you later!” Julia shouted through the closed door. Her boots clicked on the hard concrete as she made her way to the car. She took a deep breath, flicked her long fair hair behind her shoulders and slotted the key into the lock. Her bony white fingers turned it, and it made a satisfying click.
“Caaw!” Julia’s eyes widened and she turned around very slowly as if on a tightrope. There stood a crow, appearing to display a mocking grin on its ugly face. Julia breathed out. How could she have been so stupid?
“Scared of a crow? Get a grip!” She muttered, and got quickly into the car. She could see crows’ eyes following her. She turned on the ignition, rubbed her hands together and locked her fingers on to the steering wheel. It was night, and the air seemed to ripple across the trees with distinguished autumn coloured leaves. In the far distance, there was a patchwork quilt of fields, and smoke was rising from somewhere. A dark mass of cloud was seeping into view from the left, and Julia’s eyes followed it for a while, wondering whether the cloud would burst and lash down rain. She could see her breath. Her boot toe lowered itself on to the pedal, and the car reluctantly moved. The eyes of the crow had disappeared, replaced by cats’ eyes, lining the road flawlessly. Julia’s hand jerked to the radio dial. Her favourite radio station leaped into her ears as she turned a sharp bend. The cats’ eyes ceased to exist.
“Hello and thank you for joining us for the 10 o clock news. My name is Ted Jones, and here are the main headlines.”
Julia rolled her eyes as the fast drum beat kicked in, followed by a droning voice. The radio station was good, but Julia was not a fan of news.
“…and we’ve just received a story saying a patient from the local mental institute has escaped, and she is dangerous, so keep guard. If you know anything of this escape, please call us on…”
Julia was driving much faster now. Everywhere she looked there seemed to be branches, leaves jumping out to grab at her, chasing her. Her hand lashed out to the radio tuner, and the speakers blared out classical music. Julia took a deep breath, letting her mind rewind to earlier in the day.
The walls of the hospital were not hard to climb. They should’ve been, but this was a poor town, and mental patients were the least of their concern. Her friend Dan was a computer prodigy and disabled the alarm for her, with a fee of £10. It was a risky thing to do, but he was a friend she could rely on. He would have come with her, but he got caught in the process, and sacrificed his freedom for hers. Dan distracted the guards, giving Julia approximately 30 seconds. The barbed wire hurt a little, but it was mainly there to scare. After the hard fall, vibrations penetrating through her feet, she sprinted towards the nearest shop she could find. The bell rang as she opened the door, startling her. A woman dressed in a black suit looked up from her magazine and smiled at her.
“Can I help you?” She asked politely.
“Err… No thanks, just looking!” Julia squeaked in an overly high voice, her hands shaking. She felt as if millions of eyes were on her, guilty conscience exposed to the world.
“Ok, just ask if you need help.” The woman said a little less happily, hurriedly looking down again to avoid eye contact. Julia’s mind was racing. Where would she go? Was anyone after her? Scenario after scenario rushed through her head. She stumbled towards a rack of clothes, her sweaty hands pushing through them as she tried to look interested. After a few minutes, certain she had heard no sirens or calls from outside, she made her way out of the shop, feeling the cashier’s eyes on her back. She walked calmly away, until she reached a desolate street. It was there that she started running. When her heart felt like it would burst any second, she stopped, wheezing and coughing. She desperately sucked air into her lungs. She was bent over, hands on her knees, waiting for the ground to stop spinning. She looked up slowly and saw a cottage, with a red car outside of it. Julia didn’t have much choice. She needed a car to get away. She walked up to the door, and lifted up a white fist. An old woman inside heard 2 knocks ring in her ears.
The piece of music on the radio ended with a long powerful note and Julia laughed to herself.
“That gullible hag, believing every word I said and even lending me her car! I didn’t even have to steal the key off her!” She cackled, swerving a puddle of water on the roadside. Suddenly the car started to judder. Smoke rose from the bonnet. Julia let out a scream of anguish. She could see a flickering light in the distance. She willed the car forward, trying to make it to the light ahead of her. As the car chugged to the deserted garage, it ironically gave up and stopped in front of the flickering light that said “24 hour service”. Julia got out of the car, slammed the door and kicked it as hard as she could. A satisfying dent could be seen.
Julia made her way to the garage shop, where she could make out the outline of a man through the dusty window.
“Hello?” She called as she opened the door. The man jumped violently, being brought out of the T.V programme he was engrossed in.
“What do you want?” He grunted.
“My car has broken down-could you come and have a look at it please?” Asked Julia with her sweetest smile.
“Ok” was the reply. They made their way to the car, and the man told Julia to get in it, while he fiddled under the bonnet. Julia drummed her fingers on the steering wheel impatiently. Finally he appeared from under the bonnet, saying everything was ok. He shut the bonnet and came to the window. Julia rolled it down.
“That will be…” The garage man stopped mid-sentence.
“Yes?” Julia insisted, getting angry. The man started stuttering and pointing to the back seat of her car.
“God, what a weirdo” Julia muttered and accelerated away from him. As she was turning out of the garage, she caught what the man had been trying to say.
“There’s someone in the back seat!”
Julia froze.
“Good evening” Said a voice from behind her. Julia stopped the car. She recognised the voice. Her head whipped round to face Chris Donnelly.
“Its y…you” She stammered.
“It is” He replied, his eyes glinting, black hair shining. “You thought you could get away with trying to murder me!”
“It was a…all a terrible mix up! You must believe me.” Julia screamed, her voice shaking.
“It’s too late for excuses. We’re just as bad as each other, and one of us has to die.”
Julia’s stomach dropped a mile. She sank into disbelief, her heart racing and her skin tingling with fear. She was a murderer, she knew that. Chris was her only victim she couldn’t kill. They were evenly matched, but this time he was the one with the advantage. She was helpless, and weaponless.
“Can I just ask you one thing?” She said, trying to stall him, her mind desperately trying to think of a way out of the situation. If she ran, he would easily catch her, and the road was wet and slippery.
“Fire away” He grinned, pulling out a gun.
“How did you get into my car?” Julia shivered at the sight of the shiny black handgun.
“I’ve been watching you all day, Julia. From the minute you left that hospital. I followed you in my car, it’s a wonder you didn’t notice. Still, I’m not too surprised; you are classified as “mad” aren’t you?”
“I had to lie in court; I didn’t want to go to jail!”
“What goes around comes around, I’m afraid Julia, and this looks like it’s the end of you!” His white teeth showed and his eyes looked almost red with glee.
Julia had spent most of her life running. She couldn’t run anymore. A farmer heard the gunshot. _________________ OMG I'm a piece of toast |
