Once again i am modest find out who is the person who tops the number of posts and GC$. Challengers are welcome to beat it!! I will be away from my routine for next seven days. I shall be back to this communityn today after 3 to 4 hours and then will be off almost for a week excepting occasional pop-in if time permits. before I go i announce this competion, the results of which will be announced after i come back.
I had been observing that there are some posts in languages other than english. i have in quotes typed out by using english alphabets, some words in one language:
| Quote: | | Vanakkam. soukiyma? |
all you have to say is the name of the language and the meaning of it.
The first person who identifies the language by mentioning this in this thread will earn GC$ 500.
the first person who indicates the meaning or closest to it will earn GC$1000.
if both the questions are answered correctly by one person, then he get the GC$1250 and the second person whose answers correctly any one of this will get GC$ 500.
No clarifications will be entertained. the decision of cvrk3 in delcaring the winner is final.
happy hunting |

You challanged, I accept the challange
The language is Tamil.
"Vannakam" is a greeting in Tamil. = Hello
"soukiyma?" I'm not sure about that. I think it's a question asking how you are doing.
Putting it together it will be (my guess):
Hello. how are you doing? |

You win too, don't you? You are the second one. And I don't know the right translation of "soukiyma?", or at least the best translation for that word. Is it "How are you doing?" or "how's it going?" Or it might be something else.
Your translation might be better then mine...(it might be closer to the meaning of "soukiyma") and if it is, you will win (or maybe somebody else if the post a better translation). |

Hehehe.
I thought "how are you doing" and "how's it going" were the same meaning. It might even mean "how are you?" |

Yes they have the same meaning, but when you translate a language to english it might happen that (for example) "how are you" fits the foreign word better than "how are you doing" or how's it going.
This of course depents on the foreign word. Only when you know the true meaning of that foreign word (in this case "soukiyma") you can tell which translation fits the best.
Note: of course this is looking at the detail. But I like details
(And am I still making any sence, or am I just rambling? ) |

back again in action forgot to check up whether any one has beaten me in the number of posts Now for the results:
Tokkolo wins 1250GC$. ( not that she is completely right. but still for the enthu shown and for the participation she deserves it)
Monkee also wins 1250 GC$ for exhibiting similar enthu.
The word Vanakkam can also been translated to hello, it would have been preferable to translate the same as greetings.
The word soukiyama is used seeking affirmative answer to are you in good health. Frankly, it is nothing to do with health but once again a greeting indicating that everything is fine?
I have arranged for the credit of GC$.
Frankly i was expecting a greater participation. Now that the cost of Gmail invite has been increased, hope for better participation in future.
Once again greetings to Tokkolo and monkee!! |

I have liked this quiz, not for the GC$, but for the challange. It was hard to find a good translation for "soukiyama" and I didn't find an exact translation. I did found it being used in a sentence, wich was translated in English. Thanks for explaning was the actual translationis. (and ofcourse thanks for the CG$ )
Yes, there wasn't a lot of participation, just monkee and me. Maybe next time more people will join in. |
