I came across this poem called "The Final Analysis" often associated with Mother Theresa. It reminded me of looking into a colleague's 4 years old daughter's eyes and a strange question came into my mind : What rules of Ethics and Morality do you teach to our children nowadays ? This does not apply only to children but also to everybody.

Mind you. this is not a pessimistic viewpoint but rather a realistic and practical one. I will just relate a scene and would invite some comments not to this scene in particular but to your feelings about what practical persons still believe, apply and teach as Rules :

"A kid returns home and says that she pushed another child off a swing at school and took her place. The parents answer proudly that they have taught their children to dominate rather than to be dominated."

I don't believe this requires a great deal of analysis. Every functioning and non-damaged human has an innate sense of right and wrong; of what is fair, or not. The basic rule of 'don't do anything to other people that you don't want done to yourself' is self-evident. And reinforced quickly in a social environment. People push back.
The only difference between people is the willingness to ignore this, for selfish (and usually short-sighted) reasons.
Obviously, the child on the playground needs to be taught that no one need be dominated.
The principal is called selfish cooperation.

Mondine, thank you very much for your kind enlightenment.

Without prejudice, please forgive my asking but is this your practical application in real life or an idealistic belief ?

Even though I highly appreciate all comments, I am simply interested in knowing what the common "human" being living in today's "social environment", actually applies as Ethical rules ( if any ) in his/her everyday life ?

Thank you again.

It is, indeed, the most practical of everyday applications, as well as an idealistic belief.
However someone arrives at such a conclusion; whether it's a belief in the "golden rule", or karma, or social study, it's proven time and again that people will treat you as well (or as badly) as you treat others.

Probably expressed as well as any by the adage "what goes around; comes around".

But it isn't just an intellectual exercise. I believe that the conscience is a very real, and natural human component.
I try to do what I know is right, and fair, simply because (in most cases) I know what that is.
I think that this is the natural human state, unless socialization has 'taught' otherwise. For example, no one is born a bigot or racist. It is 'learned' behaviour.
