Supposedly, it is a "trusted" network, but from what I can see, there is a large percentage of people on it that consider it a sexual free-for-all. It is almost completely dominated by Brazillians -- if you believe the demographic numbers, over 4% of the population of Brazil has membership in Orkut (frankly, I think that is preposterous; more likely, most of the Brazillians have dozens, if not hundreds, of accounts each, in violation of the TOS).
I initially thought it would have significant potential, but after poking around on it for a few weeks, I am losing interest. The internet does not need yet another amateur pornsite. _________________ The Celtic Fiddler

It is a matter of personal interest. If you choose to join pron groups, you will have a pron experience there. I have been a member for a good while now and haven't been subjected to very much nudity. Occasionally, I see it while roaming through the groups in order to find a new one to my liking. With the language barrier and esoteric looking pictures one would have to be seeking out pron in many cases for it to become a real problem. Give it a try. Find those like-minded friends and topics of interest, and you'll have a lot of fun there. _________________

| I'm glad I stopped in here first to check out what others were saying about Orkut before asking for an invitation. |

Why is there all this anti orkut, anti brazil sentiment on the thread. What's wrong with having brazilians on orkut.
Why are there no complaints about how dominant America is on almost all other english language websites. I'm against neither of them but the attitude within this community confuses me. |

I got an invite yesterday, took some time to look around orkut, and I think I have a fairly good definition in mind.
Orkut: A good idea that failed to launch and landed somewhere in Brazil.
I really love Gmail and Blogger, but Orkut just isn't nearly as cool as I thought it'd be, apparently invitation only doesn't really work as well as some people might like to think. Sadly Myspace looks good in comparison, there might be a lot of retards on it, but it's also easier for people I might be interested in talking to to get into it as well. Orkut is just another web based community going belly up. : (

What did you think Orkut would be like?
Maybe we can start our own ideal "orkut" right here at Google Community. _________________ Google Search blog |

| Orkut is the almost the same thing as MySpace. Except not nearly as popular. If it gets as huge as MySpace, it may be critized by the Media and there may be big problems. If it doesn't...well...just like already said: Another web community going belly-up. |

I too got caught up in the Orkut whirl wind. I heard about it some time back and just had to get a membership, but I heard it was invite only. I finally found Google Communitiy Forum, got my invite, and was excited that I was about to have everything Google- Blogger Account, FF Google tool bar, Google Personalized page, Google Earth, Gmail, Gtalk, Picassa, etc. When I used Orkut I found, like many, a language barrier of mostly Portuguesse speaking individuals, and members that are more interested in providing pictures of themselves of where their tan lines end. It is not much different than My Space and Friendster in that it is a social networking site, but I feel there are not enough members in the community to make it as relevant or useful as My Space. I book bands for a club I work at and I find My Space helps me find new local talent I would not have other wise heard of because I work nights. Orkut helps me find a picture of a Brazilian hottie wearing a thong bikini, which really isn't relevant to me, because I can't book her. In all honesty I find these social net working profile sites somewhat like a highschool yearbook where people spurt irrelevant information about how "cool" one is and "best friends 4 ever." Everyone thank Tom. I like the idea of Joga, the interface is really cool and it seems like a good idea for the upcoming World Cup- with the idea that fans that meet on Joga can meet up at the actual game. I would like to see that sort of concept applied to websites for conventions, SXSW, or Lollapalooza. I think Orkut will go the way of Friendster- everyone knows it's there, but no one cares to use it.
