Once upon a time (way back in '03, '04 perhaps) I installed something called the Google Deskbar. It sat in my taskbar (with nothing in the system tray), it started up when I booted, and rapidly became one of my favorite programs of all time (1984 to date). Unfortunately, on the occasion of my latest fresh install, I appear to have failed to preserve its setup file (if it ever had one). No problem, I thought, I'll download it.
But, As best I can discover, it's currently unavailable anywhere on the web, having been replaced by the current googletoolbar which places the cute icon in the system tray. Okay, I gather the new one's a fast indexer/searcher of one's personal files as well as a web searcher. Altho I'd never felt the need for the indexer, I was perfectly willing to give it a try. But otherwise, it's distinctly annoying: (1) if you want it to start up at boot time, its icon appears in system tray, and I haven't found anyway to prevent that from happening. It's one too many icons for an already overflowing tray! (2) The sidebar delicacies are useless to me, so I've necessarily set the program in deskbar mode.(3) After one's search word(s) are typed in the search box, it now takes an extra click to get to the web. (3)The apparently mandatory little square box which takes up taskbar space seems to do nothing much but transfer your search box to a side bar. Do I need this? (5) the personal file search component seems to show only month and day, not year, of the item, so it's not too useful most of the time. It is fast, tho
Well enough of pickiness, tho if anyone has an answer for solving any of the above annoyances, I'd be very grateful to hear from them.
Otherwise, SOS! Does anyone have a copy of the original deskbar setup that they can make available? You'd be in my thank you prayers forever!

I don't know about where you could get Google Deskbar, but I have solutions to your problems:
To delete the Google Desktop icon from your System Tray, first right-click on it and click Close. Then select not to open Desktop automatically. Alternatively, you can delete the Google Desktop shortcut in your startup (which is most likely in your Start Menu-Programs.
If you just don't want to see the application, go to the options (by clicking on the inverted triangle), and click close. _________________

Yes, I had that, around 3 years ago. The Google Deskbar at the time
was a handy little application that bears very little resemblance to its
plump and overgrown descendant.
Since Google isn't the type that going to leave its old software laying about, you'd
pretty-well have to find some far-sighted type that saved the original installation file.
For an approximation of function, you'd probably have to explore other options.
I haven't tried it, but I see a lot of sources that recommend
Dave's quick search deskbar as something somewhat similar. _________________

| thanks for your hint, Iam, but it's not the deskbar itself that I don't wish to see (i.e., the search box), it's the *icon* in the systray. Many thanks mondine for your suggestion; Dave's Searchbar looks like it may be a winner! Only deficit I've found so far is that it produces a full size web page of results, not the small one which doesn't block out all of your current screen (which, as far as I can see, the only remaining plus of the regular Google deskbar). - Justine |

I appreciated the suggestion to try out Dave's QuickSearch, and it did look good when I installed it. As it happened, subsequent, unrelated, events made it necessary for me to uninstall it. For some reason, this proved difficult, and finally I was left with a small remnant of the search box in my taskbar. Had to do a system restore to get rid of it. And later, much to my surprise I also discovered that a 2 computer home network connection problem I was having was solved by uninstalling Google's task bar tool. Obviously not too many people are having that problem. Talk about being up a creek without a paddle!

But that's exactly the thing I described. I said that to get rid of it forever you'll have to right-click on it and click Close, and then uncheck the "start Google Desktop when my computer starts" option. _________________

Liam, I may well have misunderstood your instructions. But a later, more urgent problem intervened. After a successful install of XP Pro, I'd been reinstalling old programs, checking network connections after each re-install. The Google Deskbar install was, of course, of a new program, since I couldn't locate a setup file for the old one. Subsequently, I discovered that I now had an "Access Denied" problem with my desktop-laptop network. The only thing that worked to fix it was to uninstall the deskbar.- Never thought I'd miss it, but I am. Not willing to sacrifice network connections on its behalf, tho.
Thanks, Justine |
