Football as in American football, or football as in soccer? _________________ Mary had a little lamb, she tied it to a pylon. Ten-thousand volts went up its bum, and turned its wool to nylon. |

In terms of the amount of people who play it, football wins. Most other sports need special fields and equipment just to even play, where in football you just need something to kick and some space to do it in. _________________ Play Free Games |

Largely because the other sport called "football" in North America is a successfully packaged product, and a big business.
Once something gets misnamed over here, it tends to stay that way.
Just ask the "American Indians". _________________

Soccer ( American ) Football ( Everywhere else ) would have to be the best. I have played it all of my life and i quit just recently due to my knees getting worse and worse as the years go by. I want to be still able to play but i dont want to have to live in a wheel chair the rest of my life . I believe that it is the best sport because 9/10 people in the world have played it no matter where they are or what they do, how old they are, etc. That is why i believe soccer/football is the best sport. _________________

Football Of Course
Football is the name given to a number of different, but related, team sports. The most popular of these worldwide is Association football, which also goes by the name of soccer. The English language word football is also applied to Rugby football (Rugby union and rugby league), North American football (American and Canadian), Australian rules football, and Gaelic football. Some of the many different codes of football. Enlarge Some of the many different codes of football.
While it is widely believed that the word football originated in reference to the action of a foot kicking a ball, there is a rival explanation, which has it that football originally referred to a variety of games in medieval Europe, which were played on foot.[1] These games were usually played by peasants, as opposed to the horse-riding sports often played by aristocrats. While there is no conclusive evidence for this explanation, the word football has always implied a variety of games played on foot, not just those that involved kicking a ball. In some cases, the word football has been applied to games which have specifically outlawed throwing the ball. (See football (word) for more details.)
All football games involve scoring with a spherical or ellipsoidal ball (itself called a football), by moving the ball into, onto, or over a goal area or line defended by the opposing team. Many of the modern games have their origins in England, but many peoples around the world have played games which involved kicking and/or carrying a ball since ancient times.
The object of all football games is to advance the ball by kicking, running with, or passing and catching, either to the opponent's end of the field where points or goals can be scored by, depending on the game, putting the ball across the goal line between posts and under a crossbar, putting the ball between upright posts (and possibly over a crossbar), or advancing the ball across the opponent's goal line while maintaining possession of the ball.

Soccer (to describe UK Football) is actually an English term and was commonly used in the 1950s. My Uncle still calls it that and he has never been outside of the Midlands! lol
Australians also call it 'Soccer'.
Either way I dislike this 'we are better' nonsense. People in the north of England have different phrases/words for everyday things compared to the south to it stands to reason that America, Canada and Australia will also use different terms. So what? I think it's great. Want everyone to speak the same? That'd be boring. Anyway, us English folk also use North American terminology over here. Fantastic. Diversity is great. |

Soccer- Yes it is a great sport, very fun to play with. best to play on field or on concrete. Americans call it soccer, maybe cuz they wanna distinguish american "football" from soccer, but in spanish they call it football. The name "football" should be literal and not refer to american football, which is not using ur foot except for kick off- but the rest is fighting and grabbing. It should refer to actually using ur foot. I dont know why ppl call it that.

Football (also known as association football or soccer) is a team sport played between two teams each consisting of 11 players and is widely considered to be the most popular sport in the world. It is a ball game played on a rectangular grass field (or occasionally on an artificial pitch) with a goal at each end. The object of the game is to score by maneuvering the ball into the opposing goal. The predominant feature of the sport is that players other than the goalkeepers may not use their hands or arms to propel the ball in general play. The winner is the team that has scored more goals at the end of the match. |
