I am going to post this as a sticky so people will be able to know this

Many web browsers such as Internet Explorer and Safari might make pages look the same but I have found out that When I have uploaded my site it looked completly different then it did on XP. I have a Mac and the browsers make my site look different. Please note that your site sould be able to host correctly for all browsers to look good. To solve this issue upload a site and look at the mistakes or bugs you find in one browser. Then look at it or have someoneelse view it on another computer. Also please remember that fonts cannot be viewed if they are not on someone elses computer unless they are flash or image.

Basicaly a good idea to tell people about those problems, but there's more:

- To test a Website, Mozilla or Firefox are a good first choice, because they are highly standards compliant and in their standards conforming mode (triggered by a DOCTYPE tag), they reject nearly all possible mistakes. When the site is viewed correctly in Mozilla/Firefox and passes http://validator.w3.org/ chances are good it also works in other browsers. If not, it's not much more work.

- There are some meta fontnames, that you should use as a fallback: serif, sans-serif, monospace. Eg. you decide you'd lie your site with "verdana" text. Then you write in your stylesheets "font: verdana,sans-serif;" because verdana is a sans-serif font and if it's not found by the browser, the next specified font is used which reads "sans-serif", so the browser will pick it's own favourite "sans-serif" font.

- Understand the difference between "pt" and "px". If you use fields with a fixed width in pixels, fonts inside that field should also be specified in pixels (px). In all other cases, you should use "pt", because this is the same size on all displays (1/72 inch) and doesn't depend on the screen resolution (measured in dpi).

yep and I would like to add that if change your default text on your browser (Ex. My default font is Tahoma size 12 and I change it too Veranda size 11) this will be the font for all the sites you go to.

I downloaded Netscape, Opera, Firefox when I saw this post. My websites all looked different from IE.........

Oh my god! I have to do so much more work to debug them.....

The question is: according to my sitestats, non-IE browsers are only 3%, is it worth to "debug" if you have to comprimise your site's look...

I think it is very much worth the time and effort to debug sites for other browsers, because:

1) I think other browsers (firefox) will grow to become more popular than IE.
2) You learn to write 'correct' HTML.
3) You should, as a habit, always comply with W3C standards.

And not only that, but you don't want to leave them 3% of visitors in the dark. I'd want 100% of my visitors to see a good website, rather than 97%...

spent a whole weekend to debug...now from different browser, my sites look exactly the same. But all pages have 1-3 errors reported by W3 validator....

some errors for example like "background=" in <table> tag, it works fine in all browser. Do I need to remove it??? Don't think so...

Its better because you should make every user that comes to your site the same chance as other users.

You can do that and it will work (just work with some css), however depending on the font it may take a while to download if the user has a dialup connection.

why bother uploading? just make some .png images for wherever you would like your 'font' to be...

for small files, the file size of .gif, .jpg seems to be bigger than .png.......am i right?

Very Happy
