I've heard a lot of things now about google going to make a run at Microsoft's title as "most popular business in computing". I've heard from many websites and on the news that google has enough power to make everything you could possibly want out of a computer available to you on the internet, such as word processing, personal storage space, etc. Which can possibly make operating systems almost needless.
I'd like to know whether or not you guys think that google has the the power and potential to surpass Microsoft. |

If they keep working at it, offering more and more services like now..
They could, theres a possibility, but they're not ruthless and uncaring to their users like microsoft..
so who knows? _________________

They also have a sense of humor.
Sadly, however, they have just as bad of support. _________________ Tetris | Great Big Blog |

I think the biggest thing Google has to pass, is Microsoft offering platforms for programs. If they manage to surpass Microsoft at that, they could easily win the "race". _________________ colwwcat |

well, i don't think that google will be able surpass Microsoft, from my point of view the internet will never replace the normal computing enviroment, and so google will not be able to surpass microsoft if they provided "some" applications online or else...
I'm not a microsoft fan, but in same time i don't find microsoft that bad as some people around the web trying to show... it's a successful company and that -- normally -- creates enemies
i like the way microsoft runs its business in the software and internet field... i think if one company can make it as a total solution is not a bad thing or monopoly, it will center all services and make it more accessiable anytime, anywhere...etc. for all people, the good things are unlimited if this happens -- they won't be able to monopoly the world and make people slave or anything --
"just my opinion"

I think that while Google is a wonderful search tool, it won't be able to get past Microsoft. Microsoft offers complete solutions right now (and has a rather large head start). On the other hand, people hate Microsoft. Of course, some people might not like Google (gasp!). So basically, I've contributed nothing...
Google and Microsoft making a search tool for Windows? Where'd you hear this? Just a rumor or is it on this site somewhere? |

| I heard about a local disk search project code-named puffin. I don't think it's just a rumor, but I didn't hear that Microsoft was involved with it. |

I came across a very interesting analysis/prediction about how Google could topple Windows. It is entitled The Perfect Storm: How evolving technologies, market changes, and a rising star could kill Windows Here is the Executive Summary: Google has the opportunity to utilize evolving technologies (Linux, ubiquitous connectivity, increasing storage capacity, etc.) and market conditions (delays of Longhorn, overshoot of market needs by Windows, etc.) to dethrone Windows. I would be very excited if this is what the future holds for Google. Have a read and make your own conclusions. Afterall it is someone's opinion based on very knowledgeable analysis of technology strategy. Here is the link - http://techwalk.blogspot.com/2004/05/perfect-storm-how-evolving.html _________________ Algodon

Let's clear some points here.
Google is a web engine...
All of his software are based on Windows...
Google works side-by-side with Windows...
You could say that MSN (Microsoft in some way) is trying to go higher than Google on the internet but Google will never make an OS or something...

Let's remmeber that Google uses OS too and you need an OS to run all of Google add-ins... so OS's will always be there... But Google too...
Google / OS ¿? Thoes are different stuff...
Then Google vs. Microsoft... I'll say MSN (Microsoft) Agains Google's domination of the Web...
So Google is not trying to replace microsoft... It's just doing what it does better... Web solutions....

I didn't say that google will try to make an operating system all I meant was that google will soon have the power to to creates many web based programs that running basic programs on your OS wouldn't really be needed so much since services on the web that do the same things will be far more accessible. _________________

And tell my how will you access them? directly from the BIOS? come on... OS has nothing to do with Web-based programs... Web doesn't exists without an OS... _________________

... I didn't say that a computer can function without an OS. All I mean is that most programs that are completely dependant on operating systems will be almost gone once powerful online web based programs are released. _________________
