I find the label system of GMail a much better way of organizing messages than the old mail folder system because it allows each message to be tagged with multiple criteria and you can add/adjust the labels as you go. This allows you to create a complex organization of information over time that emerges from the bottom up.
I wonder if it is the structure and weights of the given individual's labels that Google is banking on using to target text ads? All Google would have to do would be to try to fuzzy-match the label strings (keywords) to a master taxonomy and use the number of messages tagged by a given label as a statistical weight to obtain an interest profile for the given user.
Without violating individual privacy, Google could then roll all of the profile information together to obtain more useful market-wide profile information, trace the IP addresses back to geographic regions, roll the profile data up into regional statistics, etc.
TiVo does something similar by analyzing an individual's programming choices, even making recommendations based on the profile. Do you believe Google will be able to determine similar information based on the Google labels? |

| Interesting idea. I think it's a good possibility. However, labels are often proper nouns, only one word long and only mean something to the user. This could make it very difficult to match them to keywords. |
