I have a friend who is hard to catch online. I'd like the feature found on some other IM clients, where it alerts me when a person goes online.

Yes, that's why I like using an 'envelope' program like Trillian, so I can have features like this with Google Talk (as well as a certain uniformity with, and easy management of my other integrated IM services).
Too bad that only the Pro version of Trillian supports the jabber protocol, for now, though.
