I'm told that AGP is the old, and PCI-E is the new. If I'm going to build a new motherboard from scratch, should I get one with an AGP slot?

The decision is mainly based on what you want to do with your computer. If you are going to use it for work, and not play games on it, then a AGP card will be fine.
If, however, you are going to use it as a gaming machine, then a PCE-e card would be the way to go. _________________ MS Discussion |

Thanks, you two have confirmed what I suspected. I will go with PCE-E.

Actually no... AGP is better than old PCI, but PCI-E, the new PCI, is better than AGP, or, at least the future of Graphics. Not sure it's there yet, but since I am going to be building my own computer, I'm definitely looking ahead, with future upgradeability in mind.

Whats the difference between the new and old PCI slots?
Is there some more efficient wiring or is it slot difference, i.e. older (well, not that old) cards won't work, but only the newer cards that are built for PCI-E work? _________________ Fahhem.com

Basically, the only common thing is the name (marketing and such purposes...). PCI and PCIe are two totally different beasts.
