Why did u post this in books? shouldn't it be in general discussion?
As for ur question, he had little respect for the senate, and the senate should have prevented him from becoming so powerful. Because of this he ended up going to war with pompey, and his greed for power ended up with him trying to proclaim himself as emperor. So I'd say he was very power thirsty, but not really a dictator, as he always tried to please the public by holding triumphs and public games.

As far as I know even Stalin hold public games.. where the "happy" children of the Soviet Union formed the flag of the Union, and sang the anthem, styled sometimes with a "Long live Stalin!" in russian.. yeah, interesting games.

BTW, Caesar had been chosen to be dictator (translated from hungarian, though I dunno whether in english that might be absolutely correct) officially until he dies.. and he dead thanks to the public.. more precisely.. "You too my son, Brutus?" (translated from Hungarian again)

Well, in my english dictionary, 'dictator' has 2 meanings:
1)A ruler who has complete power
2)a person who behaves in a tyrannical manner

Officially, yes he was a dictator, in the meaning that he did have almost complete control of the government, and tried to make himself emperor. But as to the second meaning, the one i presumed handsomeshrey meant, I cannot find anything to suggest he was a tyrant. But I may be wrong, and i would be interested to hear any evidence that he was.

This may prove interesting:- http://www.livius.org/caa-can/caesar/caesar00.html (a biography of julius caesar in 12 parts)

They named a salad after him. They didn't name a salad after Hitler or Stalin. so Caesar can't be a dictator.

Ha Ha Ha - I love it

He had the power, but he didn't misuse it.

Well, the Senate did proclaim him "Dictator for Life", so yeah, at least by ancient Roman law he was. Caesar is his name, it's just an arbitrary title used he died to denote an emperor.
