I think it might be a web application. Possibly an online notebook, that they may integrate into GMail. Then again, they just bought Writely, so maybe the don't need another writing tool.

Yes, very likely to be a web app.  But what about voice over IP.  They did partner with VOII according to VOIP inc earlier this year.  Haven't heard anything more since.

I meant more on the line of Vonage or Skype... With the cash they have, they could acquire one of the smaller VOIP players but which one?

They could acquire any VoIP company by the way.. that doesn't matter.
I think the new app will be an apps suite, or how other people say a web os (see eyeos.org)..

I do a lot of telcom work and agree that a VOIP offering via acquisition would make an incredible push for business expansion for G. That's a wide open area for the future.

I agree with you that literally, Google could buy anyone of the two companies (plus a lot of others) should they choose. This should be interesting to see just how adventurous and bold they are going to be. Based on how quickly product line and offerings have been made over the past year (and seemingly overnight!) there could be a whole host of new services before we blink an eye!

More to come on this obviously.

Skype is Ebay's, isn't it? And Ebay is a serious company as well.. I don't think they let the gold slip outta their hands..
