First of all, how weird is it to still have a naval base in a country that you've embargoed for decades,
and refuse to let your citizens visit, or trade with? Nutty.

And even with the American public, I think the initial Terorist Panic that allowed this kind of black hat
operation to operate with very little resistance or outcry is wearing very thin.

There are enough wild-eyed nations of the world that hate all things American.
Having this kind of nearly-lawless cowboy operation going on is just adding more fuel to the fire.
There is no way for a modern, democratic nation to justify this 'lock-em up now, ask questions later' operation
that ignores both civil and international law.
In many ways, it is chillingly reminiscent of the 'disappearing' of political targets by the KGB of years past.

If the US wants to be seen as the international Good Guys, they're going to have to stop doing things like this.

I agree completely with what mondine says. i would add to what he has said, but he has pretty muh summed it up.
