India seems to have lost Kashmir to Pakistan on Google Earth. Yes, that is how the map shows India-Pakistan borders.. Kashmir, India does not exist, but Kashmir, Pakistan exists.. the international borders shown have completely carved out Kashmir from India.
When did Google get the rights to fix international borders while the matter is still being resolved between the two countries??!! Could the people in the India forum please take this matter up with Google and get them to rectify this?
Google Earth is a good utility and I would sure appreciate it if it didnt misrepresent facts. Hope there are more of you who feel as strongly about this as I do. |

I was just about to say, I believe somebody has already asked this question here at GC, so I went in search of that post to point a reference to it here but guess what, I found the post I was looking for but it was posted by you anyway!

| well.. I haven't seen a correction to it so far inspite of posting it on the Google Earth forum.. had hoped somebody would rectify the problem or at least acknowledge the gaffe.. and at least promise to correct it.. after all, Google does pride itself on presenting accurate, unbiased facts. Hope somebody involved with the app is listening. |

Yes, it's really sad (and bad)!!! Kashmir is a really beautiful part of India, and losing Kashmir to Pakistan, that too on Google, is awful. I really hope Google rectifies this problem.
It may not have much to do anything in this duscussion (because everything is about Google), but as far as I've seen, even BBC News shows Kashmir as in Pakistan. I don't exactly know why they do it, but can anyone undersatnd why this is happening? _________________

Maybe they are referring to that part of Kashmir occupied by Pakistan? Or does it show the whole of Kashmir as being a part of Pakistan? I don't know, I can't be bothered downloading and installing Google Earth.
There is a possibility that some zealous, superpatriotic, ultranationalist Pakistani working for Google cartographed it that way. Either that or a Kashmiri who feels more attached to Pakistan than to India. |

Maybe you're right, Eric, about this debate. But the thingis, I can't check this out for myself, because I haven't got that fast an Internet connection which Google Earth needs. So could anyone having Google Earth on his/her computer please check whether only a part of Kashmir (PoK/Pakistan-occupied-Kashmir) is in Pakistan, or is the whole of Kashmir in Pakistan? _________________

| Well anyway, I think they should re-assign it to India. The consensus seems that Kashmiris are more happier being a part of India. They are being victimized of religious violence and religious extremism from all sides. They are also a minority and their language is very much distinct from most other Indo-European languages of India, not being descended from vulgar Sanskrit. Their language should be conferred some kind of minority protection, methinks. |

Yes, I think you're right. Google should most definitely re-assign Kashmir to India. I can't understand why they gave it to Pakistan (on Google Earth) in the first place. _________________

My assumption is that Google Earth's border definitions are just based on estimation to give its users a rough sense of where the countries' borders are. You'll see that the border becomes inaccurate once zoomed (zig-zag straight lines), and enclaves/exclaves are not shown at all.
If you want accurate borders right to the dot, you'll have to wait for Google Maps to reach your place.
About Kashmir, seems like most maps did the right thing to assign it as a disputed territory rather than India or Pakistan to avoid incuring either country's wrath. Google needs to do something about it eventually. _________________ Hello? Is this microphone on? Testing testing one two three...

Yeah, Google will have to do something about Kashmir, else they'll find a billion people protesting outside their headquarters, and I don't like the sound of that... _________________

| Yes. Kashmir just isn't Pakistani territory. Google employees needs to pay more attention in their geography classes. |
