i just came across 'google compute'
http://toolbar.google.com/dc/offerdc.html
it says that it gives every pc some work unit(only done by d/w google compute) which will be performed while its idle.
could someone tell me specifically what a "work unit" is ?
on one hand it seems to be some kind of big distributed systems network n on other hand it claims to solve medical diseases (eg alzheimer ...etc)
is this "protein molecule" concept just something to divert actual functioning of the s/w. i mean if its a distributed systems network then obviously our local resources would be shared, causing security concerns ... plz brief me abt it specifically _________________ http://clubcornor.blogspot.com/

I installed it, but I never noticed it doing anything...no message or anything...it just put an icon on my Google Toolbar, and that was it _________________ Football Rumours | Gloog |

as said in the FAQ of folding@hone i.e google compute, when the pc is idle, it comes up with a screensaver of protein molecule n the stuff.at the same time the pc performs calculations on the given work unit.typically these work units average abt few Mb's in size..now this concept of 'work unit' intrigues me.wat is it exactly ? _________________ http://clubcornor.blogspot.com/

| I'm not sure I totally understand it either, but like you it is an interesting concept. |

/me note to self, make a website about people not using that Google toolbar to do a search for something they have a question about.
Everyone visit distributedcomputing.info and read up on this. _________________ Info Sharkz

| Anyway, google compute is mostly dead - just install BOINC and be done with it. |

i recently read some articles of the suggested site distributedcomputing.info
esp SETI@home was an interesting concept.understood the fact that observations made by the radio telescope were huge requiring huge computing power;hence the distributed effort. Now i m amazed as to how a small program installed on our m/c performs calculations without the user having to do anything. I mean, although such programs are currently used for good purposes, cud they not be used for harmful malicious purposes ... something like 'advanced malware' or so ... ? _________________ http://clubcornor.blogspot.com/

Well, sure. A program has no morals or values. It just reflects those of the programmers and/or users.
So, someone could, in theory, launch the Home Evil Project, and get like-minded individuals signed-up to donate computing time.
Or steal the computing power by means of a trojan, similar to the ones that create 'zombie' computers that participate in things like Denial of Service attacks.
Somewhere; I'd be surprised if there wasn't a Troubled Teen working on it, as we speak. _________________
