Firstly, Greetings from the UK.
I like to think that my site has been well optimised (UK spelling)and it is on top of most other SE's for the search term Right to Buy - yet on Google I cannot get past the .gov sites - I have pretty good BL's, not massive on Google, but there again they come and go. The content is bang up to date as I use Google Alerts linked to Search Terms on Google and that means we have constant new content streaming in. The site itself even gets mentioned as a reference point on Google Alerts. I have over 40 page one entries on Google for other search terms, so I'm not complaining. But those .gov's might be authoritive, but they are not SEO'd the way ours is, nor do they have the content! Any ideas please? Hey David,
I understand your problem. As you know, there are many factors which Google considers when calculating search results. I believe Google recognizes .gov domains as a big factor, thus puting you at a disadvantage. Probably the best thing for you to do is to continue exactly what you're doing: keep adding fresh content and making sure your website is search engine friendly.
How old is your website? Websites which are 1+ years old tend to get better listings because Google thinks they are more reliable. If you stick with it, Google may eventually recognize you as a better resource than the .gov websites and give you a top position. _________________ Like my post? Thanks BigBlotch, the site is 8 years old, but we had a server crash last year and I had the site totally rebuilt but obviously kept the same URL - it was off line for 4 days, it kept it's first page listings with the other SE's but dropped from page 5 on Google UK down to 11 where it is today. So yes, I totally agree, I'll keep doing what we are doing, and do what I tell my posters and that is the same advice as you have so kindly offered. Think content and quality links.
